I don’t know how old you were in 1981, but I was ten when I was spending my allowance getting high score on Defender.

i grew to really dislike Defender. because i just wasn’t any good at it. some of my friends got huge scores on it. we all played it a lot. it was the first really big game after Space Invaders. i was 14 in 1980. the first really good arcades opened in Auckland in 1980. i was only ever really good at two games. the first one was Fire Bird, a really un-major game. there were only ever a handful of the machines in the entire city, but i could always get the high score. went through the entire software cycle several times. the other one was Moon Patrol. also mastered the whole cycle.
