U.S. Urges Scientists to Block Out Sun

January 30th, 2007

Via: Sydney Morning Herald:

THE US wants the world’s scientists to develop technology to block sunlight as a last-ditch way to halt global warming.

It says research into techniques such as giant mirrors in space or reflective dust pumped into the atmosphere would be “important insurance” against rising emissions, and has lobbied for such a strategy to be recommended by a UN report on climate change, the first part of which is due out on Friday).

The US has also attempted to steer the UN report, prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), away from conclusions that would support a new worldwide climate treaty based on binding targets to reduce emissions. It has demanded a draft of the report be changed to emphasise the benefits of voluntary agreements and to include criticisms of the Kyoto Protocol, which the US opposes.

There is a thing called “global dimming” already. Because of it we do not feel teh full efect of global warming. Search for it on google video

A nuclear winter should fit the bill nicely then.

  3. Kuromaku Kenkyu says:

Yeah, a couple of well-placed nukes will take care of the population problem, add another crisis with which to strengthen the hold over us serfs, and perhaps dim the sun somewhat. Now, is that a win-win-win situation, or what? 😉

Paging Montgomery Burns…Paging Montgomery Burns…Your greedy ideas are needed off the set of the Simpsons, and your sun blocking machine plans are wanted by the Pentagram…

Yes, the cooling effects results of a “small scale” nuclear conflict has already been discussed in the media recently.
    Iran is a smallish country…..

Well I don’t think we should AVOID the subject. While I am a strong supporter of energy independence and alternative/renewable fuels to cut the carbon footprint, ponder the possibility…..

We may have screwed the atmosphere up so much even BEFORE we knew/got scientific PROOF that without such drastic measures we’re really doomed. Not jumping on board the microdust/dimming bandwagon, just pointing out that EVEN IF we stopped all carbon input to the atmosphere AT THIS MOMENT we might still need remedial actions such as dicussed.

I believe I heard about this concept only in the last couple months. If memory serves it was being advanced by an old school nuclear physicist whose name escapes me right now.

    Enjoy.

That’s just what we need… an untested plan based on incomplete data that might potentially turn the entire planet into a permenant ice ball. It’s not nice to fool with mother nature!

IMO someone should be building a damn space-ready modern day Noah’s Ark. It may already be too late to save the whole earth.

Solar energy is competition for traditional energy sources. Makes sense to use our tax dollars to block out the competition.

  10. Jim Stunkel says:

First, I would like to know who the “US” is. Are we talking about top officials in the Bush administration or somebody else?

Second, this is a strong admission that global warming is a reality. For anyone trying to downplay downplay the risk of impending climate change and the associated risks, recommending a gigantic space mirror is the last thing you want to do.

Personally, I think these guys are further in outer space than the mirror they are recommending. It’s not that I’m totally opposed to such an idea if it proves necessary. However, it’s almost as if they are saying “lets build a mirror so we can continue burning carbon fuels to our hearts content”. They seem to be in favor of status quo when it comes to energy policy.

    Re: Jim Stunkel

The “US” is the billionaire ruling class, as in the “JUST US” system here in the USA.

Never forget the Blackwater death squads in NOLA.
