The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office are asking for help from the public in gathering information about the theft of approximately 559 pounds of high explosives from a USFS explosives bunker located near Red Lodge.

A press release from the ATF says that in April 2013, someone used forced entry to get into an explosives storage facility owned and operated by the U. S. Forest Service, which is located about two miles south of Red Lodge.

Officials say that various emulsion-type explosives, explosive cast boosters and detonating cord were taken from the facility.

The forest service never learns to put their toys away. But this is going to go poorly for whoever stole this stuff. They will get caught, and it’s probably kids.

steve holmes, let’s hope it’s just kids. I thought the implication, from a I’ve-had-enough-and-I’m-not-going-to-take-it-anymore perspective, would be that this could be used as cover for the next “terrorist” event — you know, claim some arab or muslim or chechnyan or domestic extremist stole the tnt and did the big deed. Is that enough explosives to collapse the Hoover Dam, for example? Some people think that particular event is going to happen eventually. But I don’t make predictions or cling to many without pretty strong evidence, but I also rarely discount ANYTHING nowadays. :-/

I agree. That’s why I didn’t bring up the missing nuke tipped cruise missile that went mia (supposedly) from the b52 that flew from Minot to Barksdale a few years back. Hopefully someone simply miscounted.

mangrove, it all depends on placement.

Really though, these will probably give some kids a really cool secret stash of gear for years. Well, until they realize what adult felony charges really mean, and then bury them in a field somewhere.

Explosives, weapons, and ammunition go missing all the time. Very rarely do they turn up somewhere significant.

Most likely a non-story. I’m not sure what makes them ‘high’ explosives. There’s always the chance with news stories that we’re being prepped for a false-flag, but this one really does seem more like bored Montana kids.

I didn’t realize before this that ATF was the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. I wonder how long before they add knives and caffeine to their mandate.
