Own a Vizio Smart TV? It’s Watching You

November 12th, 2015

Via: ProPublica:

TV makers are constantly crowing about the tricks their smart TVs can do. But one of the most popular brands has a feature that it’s not advertising: Vizio’s Smart TVs track your viewing habits and share it with advertisers, who can then find you on your phone and other devices.

The tracking — which Vizio calls “Smart Interactivity” — is turned on by default for the more than 10 million Smart TVs that the company has sold. Customers who want to escape it have to opt-out.

I discovered my LG TV logging data… analysing the network traffic showed not only channel selections, but also chunks of directory listing of any connected USB drive.

Needless to say the TV is not on the network anymore. For $50 you can get a raspberry pi and turn it into a media centre, without the sleazy snooping.

TV broke about 2 and a half years ago and we’ve never replaced it.
Don’t miss it one bit and the children are happy with the occasional movie on DVD.
Big Laurel & Hardy fans now.
