Finland: Man Jailed for Defending Himself Against Armed Home Invaders
July 21st, 2016Via: Russia Today:
The homeowner has been convicted of “excessive self-defense and attempted manslaughter,” Helsinki news reports. He will serve an unconditional sentence for four years and two months, which he has to spend in prison. The man also has to pay damages to his attackers, with the fine totaling €21,000 (US$23,000). The newspaper does not provide information on the severity of injuries sustained by the home-invaders, however, it is known that they survived the event.
The attackers were also convicted for felony home invasion and assault, yet their punishments are much less harsh.
All three received one-year-and-two-month conditional sentences, which is similar to probation or house arrest in Finland, depending on the case. The offender serves the sentence outside of jail, but has to follow strict jail-like rules.
The trio was also ordered to pay the homeowner damages, but their combined fine was ruled to be €3,000 (US$3,300).
Kevin, what is your stance on guns? That post last week or so with the hardcore pro-gun guys frankly surprised me. Home defense with tricked out machine guys? For real?
Look, while I have never fired a gun in my life except pellet/bb-guns, I fully respect hunters and gun owners and the right to self defense. But I do not see the need for automatic weapons in the hands of the people. Perhaps I am naive.
How is it in NZ? Surely, no one can get their hands on AR-17s etc.
I’m mostly a libertarian, so my pro-gun stance shouldn’t be a surprise. It’s not new.
Re: Guns in NZ: Guns are very highly regulated, but readily available. AR-15 variants are available here without any special requirements beyond a basic firearms license:

You can walk into a store, show your license, buy any of that stuff and walk out with it.
You don’t understand the difference between automatic and semi-automatic firearms. You should look into that.

Kevin, Is there any kind of concealed/open carry in NZ? What is involved with getting the NZ firearms license you mentioned?
While it’s technically possible to own handguns in NZ, it’s a very extreme hassle.
Handgun owners have to be members of shooting clubs and they can only shoot handguns at those facilities.
Definitely nothing like concealed or open carry allowed here. The regular police aren’t even allowed to carry guns.
The NZ firearms licensing process is described here:
