My annual Xmas and New Years vacation is visiting family in SF and LA. We visited friends in Alameda, near Oakland, and there are very large homeless encampments–much larger this year–underneath the 880 Freeway.

And then in SoCal, we were driving on the I-5 Freeway over the Santa Ana River around Anaheim. My wife who grew up around there noticed the tents along the “river” when we were driving on the freeway and remarked that she had NEVER seen that before.

    Hidden America.

darn. I thought Santa Cruz was bad with all the folks in the woods about 10 years ago. It seems like most of the newspapers have lost most of their journalists- I keep searching for articles about what’s going on with the housing market and prices, and just basic description without analysis of phenomena like this video are lacking- so many important things are only transmitted word of mouth or with social media now. There are just a few people who figured it out and are reporting on it. My landlord told me she had considered selling our Oregon apartment building today, but decided it was riskier to put the money in the stock market. Other people are moving funds out of stocks or other speculative endeavors into real estate. It’s totally unsustainable, like 1929.

I grew up 25 minutes (assuming no traffic) from this area. I’ve been by there many hundreds of times over the years.

All I can say is that this very definitely wasn’t happening the last time I was there in 2006.

I wonder if cops from surrounding areas are gathering up homeless and releasing them at this location???
