{"id":56211,"date":"2019-10-16T10:56:59","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T17:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cryptogon.com\/?p=56211"},"modified":"2019-12-27T20:20:41","modified_gmt":"2019-12-28T04:20:41","slug":"spacex-submits-paperwork-for-30000-more-starlink-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cryptogon.com\/?p=56211","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX Submits Paperwork for 30,000 More Starlink Satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>42,000 satellites in low Earth orbit&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Is anyone besides me wondering if there is some other purpose here besides fast Internet access?<\/p>\n<p>Via: <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/spacex-submits-paperwork-for-30000-more-starlink-satellites\/\">SpaceNews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>SpaceX has asked the International Telecommunication Union to arrange spectrum for 30,000 additional Starlink satellites. <\/p>\n<p>SpaceX, which is already planning the world\u2019s largest low-Earth-orbit broadband constellation by far, filed paperwork in recent weeks for up to 30,000 additional Starlink satellites on top of the 12,000 already approved by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The FCC, on SpaceX\u2019s behalf, submitted 20 filings to the ITU for 1,500 satellites apiece in various low Earth orbits, an ITU official confirmed Oct. 15 to SpaceNews. <\/p>\n<p>SpaceX deployed its first 60 Starlink satellites in May and plans to launch hundreds \u2014 potentially over a thousand \u2014 more in the year ahead. <\/p>\n<p>The ITU, a United Nations entity, coordinates spectrum at the international level for satellite operators to prevent signal interference and spectrum hogging.
