Bavaria: Experts Baffled by Mysterious Underground Chambers

There are more than 700 curious tunnel networks in Bavaria, but their purpose remains a mystery. Were they built as graves for the souls of the dead, as ritual spaces or as hideaways from marauding bandits? Archeologists are now exploring the subterranean vaults to unravel their secrets.

    That’s lame comment. The point is that nobody actually knows what these were for.

    How about trying to offer an explanation of what the article describes instead of cherry picking a single sentence to make fun of?

    This reminded me of the Roman catacombs, built at roughly the same time, or a bit earlier. We have no idea what they were doing down there.

    My first thought was Bavarian illuminati, with absolutely no reasoning behind it. But I can kinda see druid hucksters and the like using them for various trickeries.
    Also, tunnels are a great way of moving certain frowned upon products.
    I am at work with absolutely nothing to do, so please forgive me my ramblings.
