Not a Typo: Chinese Company Pays NZ$526 for 146 Million Litres of Water a Year… In a Drought Zone

April 27th, 2016

I like to think of NZ as a sort of remote, limited bandwidth version of a Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong franchise:

Via: Radio NZ:

A veritable drop in the ocean.

No, we’re talking about fresh water.

Forget it, Nick. This is Chinatown.

Pardon?

Nothing.

We of Greater Hong Kong take many prides in our tiny nation’s extravagant growth. The ones who saw our isle as a morsel of Red China’s pleasure have struck their faces in keen astonishment to see many great so-called powers of the olden guard reel in dismay before our leaping strides and charged-up hustling, freewheeling idiom of high-tech personal accomplishment and betterment of all peoples. The potentials of all ethnic races and anthropologies to merge under a banner of the Three Principles to follow

    1. Information, information, information!

    2. Totally fair marketeering!

I hope the people of NZ are feeling as angry about this as I am.

I’ve been away for so long. Is this primarily the work of the National Party, or is it some co-operative venture between the parties, both increasingly infected with a dark ideological slime?

  3. Kevin says:

Let me put it this way: I know someone who is fighting one of these operations and this person would be able to write a book about corruption at the local council level.

  4. Dennis says:

Well, I hope they do write a book…or forward their info to someone who can do something with it.

It has been my experience that there are usually only a few people taking on the entrenched, highly-paid, corrupt career bureaucrats in situations like this, where the good ole’ boys are (behind closed doors so hardly anyone can easily find out about it until it’s too late) handing out water permits to other good ole’ boys, which they then can onsell to foreigners or hedge funds. Most people are, reasonably, busy working and raising families and trusting their local governments to do right by them. Pfffft! Governments do what they always do – take care of themselves and work on gaining ever more power over the rest of us peons.

So the activists that I know or have heard about are almost all retired and spending their own money to fight the beast. These old ones know what kind of world is being handed to their children and grandchildren — a world owned by multi-national corporations controlled by psychopathic oligarchs. Kiwis, as well as many others around the world, may soon be having their domestic water taps metered and the charges automatically deducted from their bank accounts to be sent off to Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong, or Muhammad’s Marvelous Mini-Mecca.

The most dangerous volunteer job in the world? Environmental activist.
