One in 14 Catholic Priests Accused of Abuse in Australia

Seven percent of Catholic priests were accused of abusing children in Australia between 1950 and 2010 but the allegations were never investigated, “shocking and indefensible” data showed Monday during an inquiry into paedophilia in the church.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard that 4,444 alleged incidents of pedophilia were reported to church authorities and in some dioceses, more than 15 percent of priests were perpetrators.

Australia ordered the Royal Commission in 2012 after a decade of growing pressure to investigate allegations of child abuse across the country, with the inquiry now in its final phase after four years of hearings.

“Between 1950 and 2010, overall seven percent of priests were alleged perpetrators,” said Gail Furness, the lawyer leading questioning at the inquiry in Sydney.

“The accounts were depressingly similar. Children were ignored or worse, punished. Allegations were not investigated. Priests and religious (figures) were moved,” she added.

Hmm, I wonder kind of demographic would be attracted to a job that only committed bachelors may apply for. A job that also affords relatively easy access to children.

The Apostle Paul called forbidding to marry a “doctrine of devils” in 1 Timothy 4. I wonder how Catholic priests explain that passage.

@cryingfreeman – Love it. Only committed bachelors need only apply. You forgot the part that these bachelors are going be able to wear dresses (robes). Yeehah on their part.
Last time I went into a Catholic Church was about 2 years ago when I attended my cousin’s funeral mass.
For weeks afterword I kept seeing the shadow of something that looked like a gargoyle out of the corner of my right eye perched on my shoulder.
My massage therapist is also a psychic healer. He pulled what he called a “psychic vampire” off of my shoulder. He also could “see” my home, and although he has not been here, he described the exact location of my bedroom where I had he said “something in the shape of a cross” hanging in my room that the “thing” was living in. If you can imagine, I did have a dream catcher that had the shape of a crucifix in it. He told me to take it out of the house and I did. Still need to burn it I guess.
To this day, I cannot go into a Catholic church.
Can’t wait to see what comes out about the Nun’s and the abuse scandal in the church. They were after all, committed virgins and man were they MEAN to me in the one year I went to Catholic school. Used to hide from them all of the time but have repressed exactly why I hid from them.
For that reason, I hope the Nun’s part in the Catholic Church also comes out in the wash.
