Record Number Renounce U.S. Citizenship in 2016

February 9th, 2017

Via: U.S. News and World Report:

A record number of individuals renounced their U.S. citizenship or chose to expatriate in 2016, according to data published by the Internal Revenue Service today.

The government agency, a bureau of the U.S. Treasury Department, publishes the names of those individuals in a list each quarter, in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code. Before 2011, less than 1,000 individuals chose to expatriate each year, according to the lists published on the Federal Register. More than 2,300 expatriated in the last quarter of 2016 alone, and this year’s total of 5,411 individuals is 26 percent more than last year’s 4,279.

Notice how the article tries to tie the large, recent numbers of US citizens renouncing their citizenship to the election of Donald Trump as Prez. That’s bullshit, as the US won’t allow you to renounce UNLESS you already have citizenship in another country (you have to show a passport as proof). It can take years to obtain permanent residency overseas, and then even more years of being a permanent resident before you can qualify for citizenship and obtain that coveted non-US passport. Check out how difficult and long a road it is to obtain citizenship in New Zealand (unless, of course, you’re a billionaire and can buy your way in to wherever you want to go — there are always loopholes for the elite — same as it ever was throughout history).
