President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was prepared to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first U.S.-North Korea summit, marking a potentially dramatic breakthrough in nuclear tensions with Pyongyang.

Kim has committed to “denuclearization” and to suspending nuclear or missile tests, South Korea’s National Security Office head Chung Eui-yong told reporters at the White House after briefing Trump on South Korean officials’ meeting with Kim on Monday.

“A meeting is being planned,” Trump tweeted after speaking to Chung, who announced that Trump expressed a willingness to sit down with Kim in what would be his biggest foreign policy gamble since taking office.

Chung said Trump, in response to Kim’s invitation, had agreed to meet by May, and a senior U.S. official later said it could happen “in a matter of a couple of months, with the exact timing and place still to be determined.”

I hope with all my heart that this means no war. The last thing anyone should want would be that. The scale of loss of life in Korea alone would be staggering. Please, please, please… can we have real peace in our time?

I hope they fight one on one in a pit and the whole spectacle is broadcast live.

I genuinely worry about disruption to Korea’s food supply. 40 years ago, people in the West knew diddly about Korea bar the war. A lot of people didn’t recognise Korean script. Now the population’s up 20m (though growth is slowing down).

USDA: There is not enough cropland and pasture to support both direct human food use and animal feeding. Since the 1960s, South Korea has been a large net importer of agricultural products.
