I’m no expert on Illuminati or Christian symbols and had previously taken for granted the connection between the occult and the all-seeing eye especially after its appearance on the seal for the Information Awareness Office

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Awareness_Office

In the bottom picture we see the skull and crossbones, the XP (Chi Rho) and a butterfly: Death, Jesus Christ and resurrection. I believe the skull (with and without crossbones) has been a symbol of death for a very long time in Christian and many other beliefs for reasons which are obvious.

As for the first picture…I began to wonder. The Wikipedia article was interesting as was a link found on that page to a painting dating to 1525, long before Weishaupt et al. got things together.

    (Accidentally posted before I’d finished.)
I wanted to ask if anyone had anything else they could add on this subject..?

  3. Eileen says:

    Dennis,
I’ve never seen a skull with a butterfly over its head and the sign of the Christ below. Ever, let alone in a Catholic church. Source needs verified.
The eye in the pyramid doesn’t bother me (I’m used to that whatever the I’effers mean by it) as much as the happy skull. WTF is THAT? Does it mean everlasting/everchanging lifeform? e.g. butterfly changes from one form to another? in one lifespan? Or what.
This is a really WEIRD icon. Specially if its been so long on the ceiling of a Catholic church.
I need to see this for myself before I believe its true.

  4. Eileen says:

Not questioning you Kevin – this is just too weird.

  5. Kevin says:

If it wasn’t actually there, I think I would have heard from someone calling BS already. No such message yet.

  6. ltcolonelnemo says:

The symbols of the butterfly, the skull and crossbones, and the all-seeing eye have been appropriated by various groups.

According to my copy of “Signs and Symbols in Christian Art,” by George Ferguson, the Butterfly signifies the “Resurrection of Christ . . . [and i]n a more general sense . . . the resurrection of all men.” The meaning derives from the observing the stages a butterfly goes through over the course of its life.

The eye within the triangle signifies the “Holy Trinity.” Adding a circle and rays makes it even holier. The eye symbolizes God’s as “all-knowing and ever-present.”

The skull represents the transitory nature of life on earth.

This book is interesting because it shows how Christianity ascribed its own meanings to many otherwise universal symbols, from the parts of the human body, to various plants and animals, and inanimate objects. This probably served to relate every mundane object in the real world back to the Church-controlled faith. Thus, one could not look at some object without contemplating its Christian meaning.

  7. Dennis says:

    Thanks, Eileen.
Yep, it is undoubtedly a weird combo no matter what the intended significance. And its presence in a Catholic church does set off a warning bell. It’d be interesting to know how old the church/artwork is.

Hmm…It’s the “Location of the only authenticated miracle in the Midwest.” For what it’s worth I’ve emailed them to see if I can get further info.

  8. Kevin says:

Look at the right side of the round portions of those closeups.

    Moon.

  9. Eileen says:

Sorry Kevin, I don’t see the moon.
If anything, I see the rings of Saturn?

    That third picture though.
    Too weird.
    Out of place and time.
Like something out of a recent movie.
    Pirates of the Carribean?
    Amd Dennis, too damn funny!
It’s the “Location of the only authenticated miracle in the Midwest.”
What pray tell was a miracle, the icons on the ceiling of the church showing up one day?
    HAR HAR HARR
    I’m bad.
    shutting down now.
    good night.:-)
    and Dennis, too funny.

  10. Dennis says:

No reply as yet to my query about the symbols but I think ltcolonelnemo may have answered that part…except for the moon. I sent a PS to ask about that as well. Let you know if they reply.

(In case anyone’s confused those dates are day-month-year)

  12. Kevin says:

There’s a waxing crescent moon in both of them.

  13. Dennis says:

    @ Eileen
Just quoting the website. Yep, the language sounded funny to me too. A little circus-like: “Roll up, roll up, folks! The site of the only genyoowine, authenticated miracle in the grand old Midwest!”

    @Kevin
Nice bit of moon spotting there. I missed it. Maybe it’s an illusion caused by the central circle and surrounding ‘fans’ possibly being painted on a raised circular section but if you look at the top pic you can also see crescents, again in blue, on either side of the roof.

  14. Eileen says:

I think I new pair of eyes. I see the Moon now. Sheesh. Staring me in the face.
Also read all your links Dennis and so now understand what the “miracle” was.
So back to square one – if these people felt saved from the cholera – why put these symbols on their church ceiling, especially if Catholic?
Almost sacrilegious in a sense – if LtColonelNemo descriptions hold.
I’m going to send this to my friend, Dan Hermes at http://www.hermes3.net
There you can see the Universal Festival Calendar. Pretty awesome. I print the calendar with all of its beautiful pictures and stories for each day and read them aloud to my Mom on the weekends. I think its a fabulous read. If he gives me a take on this – I’ll send it on.
Here is the September link to his site:

    I still can’t believe I didn’t see that MOON!
