Finally, We Have Chickens

January 28th, 2010

Posts on Farmlet have become so rare that I think it’s worth mentioning this one here.

Via: Farmlet:

We recently bought eighteen two-day-old Barred Rock chicks. They were unsexed, so we will probably wind up with something like half of them turning out to be roosters.

Chickens, used properly, are outstanding creatures for permaculture systems. In addition to devastating the dreaded and fast moving kikuyu grass and other weeds that we have here, the chickens will provide us with manure for fertilizer, eggs and meat. They’re also a source of constant entertainment for young Owen and someone like me who has never kept chickens before.

Several months ago we picked up 3 Easter Eggers(hens), then later 2 Orpingtons(1 hen 1 rooster), and finally 3 Silkies (too young yet to know their sex).

They’re great fun, provide plenty of nitrate laden manure, and definitely keep the leaves turned and the bugs down.

I mentioned to my doctor about our new chickens and he immediately wanted to set up an arrangment between us for organic eggs and meat. There is definitely interest and market demand for humanely and organically produced eggs and poultry.

Congratulations on the chickens! They have been excellent companion animals for us (and we ended up with a couple of dozen rescued battery hens).

We have none at present due to increased fox activity, which leads me to wonder – do you have foxes or an equivalent predator in New Zealand?

No foxes. However, stoats, weasels, ferrets, feral cats and hawks are all potential threats.

My friends got some langshan chickens. (they also had a weasel catching them). They are neat because they are more friendly than other roosters and they have a special dance.

My Pap (grandfather) made me catch loose chickens and clean the coup when I was a kid. I hated it. They always attacked me. I still hate chickens, so I eat them. I never eat pork, almost never eat beef anymore, and fish is getting dicey, but I will always eat chickens. If it turns out chickens actually rule the universe, I’m doomed.

Hey wow, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to go look at the Farmlet site. Absolutely brilliant! I swear you must tweak all those images, everything is so bright and sensationally colorful. Or I just live smack dab in the middle of Cancer Central and everything here is smothered in… a sort of gray.
It seems pretty clear to me that Owen is already a strong, bright, responsible kid. Good work, all of it.
