Google as Experimental ISP; Will Offer One Gigabit Per Second Connections

February 11th, 2010

Via: Google:

We’re planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

If I were the paranoid type, I’d say the timing of this — coming out right after the announcement that Google was climbing even farther into bed with the NSA — is mighty suspicious; like, gee wouldn’t it be nice if we could have even more data flowing into our super-duper web-monitoring cyberbeast.

Actually saw this one coming from a couple years back, might have even read about it here… Google’s been buying up fiber-optic lines all over the place for quite some time now. Ya gotta admit they have an effective marketing tactic – let a few exclusive types play with a new toy and make everyone else jealous. There was a time when you couldn’t get a gmail account without being ‘invited’ by a ‘friend’. They knew who your friends were before facebook 😛
