Musk said the victims were plane owner and pilot Doug Bourn, 56, a senior electrical engineer from Santa Clara; Brian Finn, a 42-year-old senior interactive electronics manager from East Palo Alto; and electrical engineer Andrew Ingram, who lived in Palo Alto and turned 31 on Monday.

Residents of a densely packed neighborhood in East Palo Alto, Calif., awoke to explosions and fire Wednesday when a small plane carrying employees of an electric car company crashed in dense fog, killing all three aboard and spewing debris over several homes.

The twin-engine Cessna 310 hit 60-foot-high transmission lines, and its fuselage was found tangled in wires.

The victims, who were not immediately identified, were employees of Tesla Motors Inc., a San Carlos, Calif.-based firm that builds electric-powered vehicles. They were headed to Hawthorne, where the company has operations.

“Tesla is a small, tightly knit company, and this is a tragic day for us,” said Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive.

    Yes it is “surreal.”
    The attack on Toyota for freaking floor mats, and the recall of 2010 Prius’s based on 80 complaints worldwide. That’s 80.
    Smells to me like someone, could it be…the new owners of GM are pissed off that they now own a company that sells as Neil Young sang, “piece(s) of crap,” so go after the good guys. I dunno.
    To kill the competition? Maybe a coinkydink. But the hairs on my neck and the odd circumstance internal radars are up.
    Wonder how the quality of GM vehicles is standing up these days now that it is own by the U.S. Government, e.g. all American taxpayers?
    They’ve sold crap for how many years now – built in obsolescence. The car dies shortly before or after the warranty dies. Long before the person who takes a car loan for 5 years can pay it off.
    Its a racket. And when the up and coming competitors are cut out the picture in plane “accident?” It is SURREAL.
