This Guy Can Get 59 MPG in a Plain Old Accord

January 5th, 2007

Via: Mother Jones:

“Buckle up tight, because this is the death turn,” says Wayne. Death turn? We’re moving at 50 mph. Wayne turns off the engine. He’s bearing down on the exit, and as he turns the wheel sharply to the right, the tires squeal—which is what happens when you take a 25 mph turn going 50.

The article in Mother Jones is quite good, and they do a good job of pointing out the compromises you must make to get such good MPG numbers, as well as pointing out which practices could potentially run afoul of local laws. Could have outlined the hazards a bit better: they mentioned loss of power assist for steering and brakes but did not mention neutral safety switches and other types of ignition/transmission/brake system interlocks that could cause trouble. No mention of ignition/steering interlocks either – you risk locking your steering up if you perform the engine-shutoff maneuver wrong. An attentive driver (wish there were more ) would have little trouble performing these feats, though.

Forget the Honda Civic, you need ‘Yves Rossy The Swiss Jet Man’!
