January Earnings
February 11th, 2008Earnings from all sources on Cryptogon and Farmlet came to a total of $1568.28*, or more than 3x the minimum monthly goal of $500.
Thank you.
Out of the thousands of people who read Cryptogon, a couple of dozen are regular or semi regular cash contributors. Their generosity has always provided the bulk of the earnings. Thanks guys. In January, though, for the first time in nearly six years, earnings from affiliate relationships exceeded cash contributions! That is, 53% of total earnings were commission payments.
We had a blow out month for Blue Host signups. Seven is the new record. Thanks to the owners of the following sites for moving their operations to Blue Host via Cryptogon:

People are buying everything from books to mini DVD players to doom preparation supplies on Amazon. I didn’t even know that Amazon sells freeze dried food?! Yes. Indeed, I saw several orders for Mountain House #10 Can Turkey Tetrazzini. I chuckled and wondered what the story was with that? It turns out, Amazon is selling it for $14.79 with free shipping for orders over $25. It retails for $32.99. Bargains, bargains. Much cheapness, my friend.
Hundreds of books were ordered on just about as many topics. I’d be curious to hear from those of you who bought, Moneymakers: The Secret World of Banknote Printing by Klaus W. Bender.
Man, that’s a weird and arcane topic for a book length treatment… Of course, I should have known that several Cryptogon readers would buy that after the reference in the story about the mysterious $100 supernotes. I considered buying it myself, but I shouldn’t roll the dice on a book that will cost me about US$60 by the time it reaches me here in NZ. So, what did you guys think? Is it worth getting?
BullionVault continues to be popular with those of us (me included) who desire professional vaulting for our certified, physical gold. Cryptogon readers are active on BullionVault in dollar, sterling and euro denominated accounts. Don’t let my total in dollars fool you. Most of January’s action was sterling holders pulling the trigger.
Finally, thanks to Financial Web for their ongoing sponsorship of Cryptogon.
* Cryptogon’s top contributor is in New Zealand from time to time. She and her husband paid for me to fly down to Auckland to meet them for an afternoon. This contributor was OK with me writing about the trip, but New Zealand is such a small place that I was concerned for their privacy. Someone’s auntie’s postman would hear about the story and be able to put two and two together, and then they would tell the butcher who would email some guy, etc. Kiwis are laughing right now, I’m sure, and so are people who live in small towns. New Zealand is a village. Therefore, we decided that it would be better not to discuss the nature of the trip and why they were in Auckland. Believe me, it’s a good story and it almost hurts not to be able to tell it, but I didn’t want to close out January earnings without acknowledging the extreme generosity of this Cryptogon reader and her husband.
Thank you.
I can tell all of you that part of what she gave us included the milk bottles you see in this Farmlet post. HEHE

Hey Kevin,
I don’t know about other readers but I really enjoy when you post what people are buying. I secretly hope you’ll mention one of my items but it hasn’t happened yet.
Thanks again for the sites and keep up the good work. Gotta pick up some turkey tetrazzini…
Several people like that! I actually wrote Amazon and told them we need a widget to automatically list things people are buying, or popular things, on individual sites.
No response.
They did make a close copy of LibraryThing for aStore, which I suggested, probably along with thousands of other people.
