What I Learned in Jail Last Night

March 7th, 2008

I think the point is to get as many people onto the electronic plantation as possible. Will the girl have trouble entering another country now? You know, now that she has been arrested for drinking a beer wrapped in a paper bag?

Via: Gawker:

As I was led through the subway station in handcuffs Tuesday night, a young girl called after me, “Oooh, undercover got you, didn’t they? What you did, ma?” Good question! All I did was drink a beer from a paper bag while waiting for the F train. Trashy habit, and technically illegal, but who cares, right? In fact, the NYPD cares very much. What followed was twenty-four hours in two jails, hours in handcuffs, and eventual dismissal in that three-ring circus known as Night Court. Everything I need to know about life, I learned in the female prisoner holding pen in the Tombs.

Great idea from one of the commenters on that site:

“Conspiracy theory: The more people (esp. of color) they arrest, the more mug shots and fingerprints they will have, getting closer to having a complete database without having to require every single person to come down and be fingerprinted for no reason. Just arrest anyone possible for any tiny violation, and build the database.”

At the very least, it’s a fringe benefit that I’m sure the folks in “homeland security” are aware of.
