Rangiora Eco Village
March 13th, 2008I read about the new Rangiora Eco Village development in a local newspaper yesterday. I wanted to mention it because I know that some of you are in New Zealand, or are planning to be here soon. This isn’t too far from where I’m sitting at the moment, and I’d like to see more Cryptogonners in the neighborhood. * hint *
Yep, you would need to bring a decent chunk of change, but it looks like you would be getting the total package, with community being the most important benefit.

I’d love to be there. South Island was more to my liking but with an eye on raising my own food the question is along the lines of where is the most temperate area in NZ. My feeling is around the Hastings or Gisborne zone, maybe Nelson for the sunshine. No matter what I’m getting my ducks in a row and starting to plan my retreat from North America.
Kevin, you aren’t kidding about a decent chunk of change. But I got so excited to see this that I went to look see how much money I could borrow off of my tax free savings. Not much – and not nearly not enough to kiss this US goodbye. Darn It.
But I did learn a good thing: the US gov will let me turn my savings into a Roth IRA. And I thought I’d have to kiss all the savings I’ve had goodbye thanks to the upcoming bankruptcy of the U.S. govmint.
You look to live in what appears to be an awesome place.
Goddess bless you and Becky and Owen.
Thank you for thinking of your readers – and providing a potential escape. Not going to happen for me and Mom. But thanks for the dream Really.
We’ll be slogging on here I guess.
I think The New Adventure in the U.S. is just about to hit full throttle.
I’m already gone through the denial and despair. I’m now into Grandmother mode – my grandmother who came from Slovakia at 17 to never see her family, all but one sister again. But she left her 5 daughters a tidy fortune. Buying houses during the depression (money made off of food she grew and sold and grandpa’s skills at the still) and renting them.
I feel very fortunate that my parents were so much older than I that they had stories to tell me about living through the Depression( I thought several times …if my mother tells me that story one more time!)
I know this might sound weird, but for years I’ve felt like such a downer.
I don’t know what to think or feel anymore. But it’s here. the crash.
I’m actually looking forward to using what I’ve taught myself about growing food, protecting myself, etc.
I’ve learned a lot from you Kevin, and Becky and Owen.
Uh, I’ve got to work on the fuel aspect of things. Apparently!
Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Mercy!
E
This is a developers version of an eco-village so any sense of community that might come out of it would be left to chance – especially with the houses all being so far apart.
Anyway, if you formed a community before buying you could get a much better deal.
Even if you only had one other party I know that in the Doubtless Bay area you could split 10 acres between two parties for NZ$100,000 each or if you want a stunning view of Doubtless Bay itself you could split 2 acres each for about $140,000. That’s the prices now, by winter there might be some better deals popping up.
You also don’t need to spend quite so much on a house if you don’t want to. It all depends how much of the work you could do yourself. If on the other hand you want, and can afford, to have it all done for you this is probably the way to go.
