When Becky and I tell Kiwis that using clotheslines is illegal where we lived in the U.S., they think we’re kidding.

Toronto Hydro is giving 75,000 homeowners a “low-tech,” energy-saving device — a free clothesline.

“This is the first time we’re doing the campaign with a clothesline,” Toronto Hydro spokeswoman Denise Attallah said.

The 40-foot long indoor/outdoor retractable clothesline — retail value about $13 — will be given away over three weekends, starting on Saturday, April 26, and ending on Sunday, May 11. At each participating Wal-Mart, Zellers, Costco and Home Depot store, clotheslines will be handed out to the first 500 residents between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

To get one, recipients will require proof of Toronto residence.

The benefits of a clothesline are certainly known to Aurora’s Mayor, Phyllis Morris, who is leading a “right to dry” campaign. In January, the provincial government announced 60 days of public consultation about restrictions in building covenants and other property bylaws on the use of outdoor clotheslines.

Ms. Attallah, who confessed she is a clothesline user, expects there will be a lot of interest in the Toronto Hydro campaign.

“Talking to people about the program, I’m surprised to find out how many people actually do either hang them in their homes or in their backyard in the summer,” she said.
