Earthquake on East Coast of U.S.

August 23rd, 2011

Via: Wall Street Journal:

An earthquake just hit Virginia, and the tremors were felt all the way up here in Manhattan, where markets were a little shaken, too.

The quake’s epicenter was in Mineral, Virginia, southwest of DC, in the middle of Virginia. The magnitude was 5.9, according to USGS — they upgraded that from an initial reading of 5.8.

Apparently there were tremors felt as far away as Martha’s Vineyard, Detroit and parts of Ohio. That’s a really wide area of impact for a relatively small quake.

Just outside Baltimore MD, felt it real good in the office building I work. Got the rest of the day off. Score.

I was on my computer at home about 25 miles SE of the epicenter. I really don’t think it was a 5.9 quake. I was in a 5.2 quake in CA years ago and it was much worse. It was pretty long, though. I have yet to see any physical damage anywhere. I didn’t even hear any car alarms go off. Although, folks around here will be dealing with foundation and wall cracks in the coming months for sure. I am much more concerned about the potential hurricane coming to the area by this weekend. I only have one month left in VA and then I move home to PA. I can’t wait.

Yah, here in the Burh my coworkers felt the building shake. I was too busy running my mouth to get it.

I think about the bridges I have to cross to get out of Dodge a lot.
Food, water, shelter. Something to bust the windows on your car when you are swamped with water.
When I get off of the interstate after a 1 hour plus drive I say thank you to the humans around me. Makes my day to make it to work alive.
