David Petraeus resigned abruptly Friday as CIA director after an FBI investigation discovered his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell.

Broadwell, who released All In: The Education of General David Petraeus earlier this year, is now under investigation for trying to access Petraeus’ email, which may have exposed classified documents, sources told NBC News.

The FBI probe is unlikely to result in charges, NBC’s source noted.

The president said that CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell would serve as acting director. Morell was the key CIA aide in the White House to President George W. Bush during the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

“I am completely confident that the CIA will continue to thrive and carry out its essential mission,” Obama said.

Pffft! Affairs of Gubmint Elite are always known to intelligence agencies, and so the timing of this disclosure suggests that Petraeus *really* ticked off Obomber by not covering for him a few weeks ago on the Benghazi fiasco —

Rumors are that Stevens knew al-Qaeda was on US ‘payroll’ to topple Libya. Obama needed him dead. Obama put the blame on the CIA for not helping Stevens. A career honorable soldier like Petraeus would not compromise and lick the emperor Obama’s shoes?

“Timing, everything suspicious. There has to be more to this story.” Conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham floated the idea that the resignation has something to do with the handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

“COINCIDENCE?!” Ingraham tweeted. “Petraeus is set to testify NEXT week at a closed door session on Capitol Hill ab[ou]t Benghazi. Did [President Obama] push him out? This stinks!” The Senate Intelligence Committee confirmed that Petraeus will not testify during that hearing, according to CBS News’ Mark Knoller.

Last week, the CIA issued a statement denying that the CIA refused to provide reinforcements to the consulate personnel under attack in Benghazi. “No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate,” according to a CIA spokesman.
