U.S. Admits That Pakistan’s ISI Sponsors International Terrorism
August 1st, 2008The question is: Why admit this now, since it has been known all along?
Then there’s the little Mohammad Atta ISI issue, which, of course, is nowhere to be found in the New York Times piece below.
Via: New York Times:
American intelligence agencies have concluded that members of Pakistan’s powerful spy service helped plan the deadly July 7 bombing of India’s embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, according to United States government officials.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani of Pakistan visited Washington this week.
The conclusion was based on intercepted communications between Pakistani intelligence officers and militants who carried out the attack, the officials said, providing the clearest evidence to date that Pakistani intelligence officers are actively undermining American efforts to combat militants in the region.
The American officials also said there was new information showing that members of the Pakistani intelligence service were increasingly providing militants with details about the American campaign against them, in some cases allowing militants to avoid American missile strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Speculation about “why now”: they are ratcheting up the perception of Pakistan as a dangerous nation, in preparation for some future operation against it. It takes a while to get someone on the “axis of evil” list.
It was elements of the ISI who were responsible for the Taliban’s cohesion into a well-disciplined, tightly-knit network of Islamist fanatics who eventually took control of Afghanistan.
@anothernut:
That’s scary. Pakistan has nukes. I wonder if this “perception management” is taking place because the Pakistani government has hinted (or so I’ve heard) that they would help Iran if Iran were attacked by the US and Israel.
I know Rense is a dubious source, but they have put forward the most plausable explanation for why Pakistan is now in the U.S. crosshairs.
Apparently, there has been a “coup” within the U.S. foreign policy-making establishment, with Zbigniew Brzezinski’s neoliberal (hawk faction) forcing out the neocons. Brzezinski advocates a reduced U.S. presence in the Middle East (he’s chummy with the Arabs, as he was the protege of the Arabs American banker, David Rockefeller), in favor of a resumption of the 19th Century “Great Game” in Central Asia, with the U.S. playing the role of imperial Britain. And Brzezinski has long had a grudge against Pakistan apparently, going back to the Afghan-Soviet war that he schemed to bring about as Carter’s National Security Advisor.
And BTW, as Brzezinski is Obama’s chief foreign policy advisor, I think we can safely conclude that his election in the Fall is a foregone conclusion.
