And Now… Bookless Libraries

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff is an unabashed book lover with 1,000 first editions in his private collection, but even he sees the writing on the wall.
Paper books have lost their allure, and future generations may have little use for them, Wolff contends.
So when he embarked on a mission to create a countywide library system, he decided it should be bookless from the start.
Today, after months of planning, Wolff and other county leaders will announce plans to launch the nation’s first bookless public library system, BiblioTech, with a prototype location on the South Side opening in the fall.
“If you want to get an idea what it looks like, go into an Apple store,” Wolff said.

So… basically somewhere public to go look pretentious?

I recently purchased my first Kindle (Paperwhite). I prefer to purchase technology that has more of a single application but that does it best.
For example, instead of getting an iPod I got a Korean Cowon flash mp3 player that has up to 110 hour battery life.
I would argue the Kindle is the best e-reader out there and has its place in the sun. I can hold a multitude of books on it. HOWEVER, it is something I have purchased for contingency purchases and for travel.
After having it for a short while, I’ve realized it can and will NEVER replace the physical book. Screw this fiddling with touchscreens to get to which page I want in a book. Just like gold and silver, with books, you gotta have physical. I ain’t diggin’ the whole transhumanist/singularity/digital junk.
