We have seen huge advancements in 3D printing. We’ve even seen oversized wrenches printed that measure 1.2 meters in length. Now, we can print an entire 2,500 sqft house in 20 hours.

In the TED Talk video below, Behrokh Khoshnevis, a professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), demonstrates automated construction, using 3D printers to build an entire house in 20 hours.

Near the end of the video, Behrokh Khoshnevis (the professor in the video) states:

With respect to employment impact, there’s a lot of concern about people being put out of construction jobs. The reality is that a lot of new jobs can be created in this sector as well. Currently, women and the elderly do not have much opportunity to work in the construction industry. With new technologies like Contour Crafting, those groups of people can also be employed in more creative activities of construction. At the beginning of the previous century around 1900, 62% of Americans were farmers. Today, less than one and a half percent are involved (in farming). The world did not come to an end as a result of utilization of agricultural technologies, and the same will be true in the case of construction. There will always be better economies resulting from advancement and utilization of technologies that just make sense. Thank you.” -applause-

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Or throw up.

I’ve been building a 1,500 square foot house since june. Five months later, I’ve given up on the exterior and started insulating. It’s snowing and I need to move inside of a house that won’t be done for another year. Do-it-yourself madness is alive and well.
I wish I had that giant 3d printer right now.
