Music Videos Prepping the Kids… For What?

October 21st, 2008

I don’t know what to make of these videos. They’re produced by the Megacorp media mills Time Warner and Universal. My best guess is that watching revolution on screens is somehow supposed to make the viewers feel as though they’re participating in revolution, as they sit on their asses. Just keep sitting there…

I don’t want to be thought of as someone who focuses too much attention on music videos, but these have some pretty consistent meme payloads.

Disturbed – Land Of Confusion

Linkin Park – Shadow of the Day

Flobots – Handlebars

Maybe it’s just marketing to the Don’t-Tase-Me-Bro generation.

It probably is “just marketing to the Don’t-Tase-Me-Bro generation”. But some bands really are dedicated to bringing down the corporate state. They start their own record labels and LOUDLY urge their fans to boycott Big Business. I think a guy like Al Jourgensen (Ministry) is sincere in his hatred of all things Corporate America. Here is a video of his:

Derrick Jenson is enthusiastic about his supporter in the band Fall Out Boy.
At the DNC, one set of traditional protesters had a big fight with another group holding a Flobots, RATM concert because they were trying to distract people from holding signs and marching by organizing a week of Tent State, where students would discuss politics and share skills in tents.
At the RNC, RATM had a pied-piper role, which they might relish after their famous 2000 DNC concert. Some of the video from the RNC was amazing but it was off of TV after a day or two. Perhaps there was less impact than in 2000 even though there was a lot more tear gas and arrests. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kokVqHl1aIo

Their target seems misguided-it’s a bloated centralized state that’s to blame for most of the (first) world’s injustice, not corporate leeches (without that, what could they cling to?).
