Tesla Energy, a division of California serial entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors, will supply the batteries for a unique solar farm and energy storage system being developed for Kauai Island Utility Cooperative, the co-op said Tuesday.

SolarCity, whose chairman is Musk, is building the system and selected Telsa Energy for the planned project, which is believed to be the first utility-scale system in the United States that will be able to provide electricity generated from solar energy on demand, even at night.

The 52-megawatt-hour Tesla Powerpack lithium-ion battery storage system is expected to provide up to 13 megawatts of power onto the grid.
