The Summers Conundrum

November 13th, 2008

Maybe I need to add a Change and Hope category.

Via: The Nation:

We all know in the backs of our minds that Barack Obama’s incredible victory will eventually be followed by disappointment. But does it have to come so soon, and hit so hard? The answer will be yes, if Lawrence Summers is named treasury secretary in the president-elect’s cabinet, as many observers believe will be the case. Summers was one of the key architects of our financial crisis–hiring him to fix the economy makes as much sense as appointing Paul Wolfowitz to oversee the Iraq withdrawal. And when you look at the trail of economic destruction Summers left behind in other crisis-stricken countries who sought his advice in the past, then “terror” might be a more appropriate word than “disappointment.”

I love reading Mark Ames (who is more likely than not also “The War Nerd” AKA Gary Brecher). His dry, acerbic wit really echoes the cynicism I feel about the day and age in which I live.

For me and many others, the honeymoon isn’t over yet with Obama.

Oy yes, Rahm Emmanuel is a spy for the Israeli’s – but how better to comfort them than to give them the sense that with Rahm as chief of staff that Israel is still in charge of the world’s destiny? What a hoot.

Oh and then let us not forget the present tense, GWB that man with a 76% disapproval rating is going to lecture the G20 this weekend and tell the world how GREAT capitalism is! And you know, totally discredit himself by blabbing about “his” worldview and the citizens he purportedly represents ONCE AGAIN (there is a link on Bloomberg re his upcoming “speech” but I could only find part II).

I don’t know if I can take the next couple of months. Physically, emotionally, and spiritually to hear this gutter snipe (oops we all have our karma I should be nice) speak AGAIN. Go Shopping. That phrase will live in infamy. When I hear him speak my eyes roll back into my head and I feel my gut seize up and I think sometimes I am just going to EXPLODE or IMPLODE. I need to get through the next couple of months until this is NO MORE. Unless maybe at a tribunal somewhere?

So right now, I’m trying to keep my powder dry and my sanity intact. And I think that even with a few drunken sailors on board, Obama will still manage to be the captain of the ship. It still may sink, but at least this guy seems to know how to recognize when it is sinking, and will tell us that it is sinking. The phrase “go shopping” is most likely not in his vernacular.

Yes, hope at this point, is my emotional response to a black man being elected Prez of the USA. I will pray for them, all these politicians. I will pray for all of them. Repent ye sinners. Cast off your dark ways. Be righteous.

And may your God, whoever it is, forgive you if you try to fool us again.
