Trump Vows Executive Order Requiring ‘Free Speech’ at Colleges

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday he would soon sign an executive order requiring American universities and colleges to maintain “free speech” on campuses and threatened that schools not complying could lose federal research funds.

If universities do not comply “it will be very costly,” he said. The U.S. government awards universities more than $30 billion annually in research funds.

How did you put it, “antics under the big top”

It is amazing to watch. Executive order requiring free speech, superseding the 1st Amendment I assume. An interesting concept. Should we demand an Executive Order that copy and pastes the whole Bill of Rights?

It gets more surreal by the minute.

Why do you assume “superseding the 1st Amendment”? As a uni lecturer at two institutions for a decade from the mid-90s, I witnessed the shutting down of free speech on campus, despite our 1st Amendment rights. I was handing out info about FIRE (fire.org) Foundation for Individual Rights in Education in class, as the issue was getting so alarming, and some of my students, during office hours, were detailing the ways that their “unpopular” (non-politically correct) opinion was silenced in class discussions, with the tacit approval of the professor. I haven’t been on campus since 2006, but what I read from alt media and hear from former colleagues reveals how much worse it has gotten, particularly for males who don’t fit into protected minority classes (even though they may be numerically in the minority at their particular institution).

Because federal research funds are what’s driving a lot of universities these days and helping to keep them afloat, threatening to withhold those funds sounds like a swift and effective way to force admins to adhere to students’ 1st Amendment rights instead of cave to whichever person or group on campus happens to be loudest about their hurt “feels” in response to someone’s stated opinion or even perceived verbal “microaggressions”. There are already policies on campus to protect students from harassment. Students, however, should not expect to silence others’ opinions and speech merely because they are offended by such. But that’s exactly what they have been successful in doing, and becoming more successful as they create such dissension on campus until they get their way (or until the president is blamed for the chaos and forced to resign).

I’m waiting to hear what FIRE’s assessment is of this proposed executive order. They are currently investigating it.

I was last in close proximity to a university in 2005 and the nuts were definitely running the nuthouse by then.

Like a ‘bump’ for the Bill of Rights?

That’s essentially how I took Trump’s threat to the colleges Dennis, Pookie–bump free speech back to the top.

In this clip at :26 and 1:17 trump also talks about free speech and the social media oligarchy.

Like a bump for the Bill of Rights. Nice, that captures my original thought. Supersede the 1st Amendment with the 1st Amendment; it was meant as a joke.
