Treating Children for Worms Yields Long-Term Benefits, Says New Study
August 4th, 2020Via: Berkeley:
Children who receive sustained treatment against common parasitic infections grow up to achieve a higher standard of living, with long-lasting health and economic benefits extending to their communities, according to new findings from a research team led by a University of California, Berkeley, economist.
The pioneering study, focused on Kenya and covering 20 years, found that children who receive a few extra years of deworming treatment — costing as little as 50 cents a year — eventually have better jobs and higher incomes than those who got less treatment.
I think it’s also a good idea for adults to dose with albendazole, mebendazole or similar yearly if your life involves forays into the wild and to less developed nations…or maybe if you just have contact with kids!
Prices for these skyrocketed in the US in recent years due to a company called Amedra purchasing marketing rights. They, like Mylan, took steps into savage capitalism that went beyond milking the consumer cow to cutting steaks off it. They’re now owned by Amneal and I *think* the price has come down considerably. An alternative treatment is pyrantel.
Interestingly, mebendazole and others in its family have been shown to have use as anti-cancer drugs, and some are claiming successful treatment and clearance using fenbendazole.
