Zuckerberg Launching Threads to Compete with Twitter
July 4th, 2023Via: AFP:
Elon Musk spent the weekend further alienating Twitter users with more drastic changes to the social media giant, and he is facing a new challenge as tech nemesis Mark Zuckerberg prepares to launch a rival app this week.
Zuckerberg’s Meta group, which owns Facebook, has listed a new app in stores as “Threads, an Instagram app”, available for pre-order in the United States, with a message saying it is “expected” this Thursday.

There is an established list of popular fiction plots for them to choose from for their Battle of the Tech Giants soap opera series. After this season’s sports showdown theme, perhaps they’ll move on to a UFO theme next season, such as making rival claims about being befriended by aliens. Or they could claim to be aliens, and the wrestling match could turn out to have been Rimmer vs Superman? In that case, it wouldn’t do to have a winner, so the wrestling match (spoiler alert!) would have to be interrupted when they were evenly tied by some catastrophe that they work together to save the world from. The current season would end with the catastrophe occurring (climate-change related? insect-propagation-for-food-related?). The next season would begin with a flashback revealing that they are aliens, then bring us up to the time of the catastrophe, then show them saving us from it. And the season after that?
Nice Snowman—let’s add in the DoNoEvilCorp dynamic duo to the cage/wrastlin’ match, and maybe even MicroEmpathyman to round out the ticket.
More aliens than you can shake a stick at:

You are way ahead of me. I’m from the Clark-Kent-on- black-and-white-tv era. But I read that there is something called Dark Empathy, which should be a Nobel Prize category. So many contenders!
No not way ahead of you–just a mediocre attempt at continuing the humor.
Yeah, the term dark empathy is interesting, but I wonder if it is just a different term for a high functioning psychopath? They understand empathy very well and use that knowledge against their victims, they just don’t have any.
Bobby Kennedy was just interviewed by Lex Fridman and he explains how his uncle JFK would talk about the only way for peace in the World is to put yourself in the shoes of your adversaries in order to understand their behavior in the proper context–JFK seems like a good example of a leader who cognitively understood empathy very well, but also exhibited the actual trait in profound ways–at minute 19:

I am shocked to hear that JFK was making a deal with Russia to have the missiles removed from Cuba. I lived in Miami at the time, and the newspapers and tv told us that Kennedy had said to Kruschev, “Take your missiles away or we will bomb your Cuban missile sites.” Until your post, I had never heard otherwise. No one ever disclosed anything otherwise that I’ve heard of from then to now. Makes me think that we really know next to nothing about how the bigwigs are running the world; all we can do is speculate, based on what little evidence we can get hold of.
I thought what RFK said about moral courage was words to live by.
