Cold Steel Big Bore .625 Blowgun – 5FT
June 1st, 2025One of my sons is heavily into bushcraft and hunting with a variety of weapons (not just firearms). Besides rifles, he uses bows, crossbows, slingshots, spears… and now, a blowgun.
He has killed four possums over two nights so far with his new Cold Steel Big Bore .625 Blowgun (Amazon affiliate link).
In case you have any doubts about how serious of a weapon a blowgun can be:

This is a far cry from Amazonians with blowpipes and curare-tipped darts hunting monkeys. I had no idea.
I’d known about blowguns being viable for small game, but I had no idea about larger animals. It requires a lung or heart shot, of course.
When my son practices, he says that he has to shoot at a bunch of different targets because shooting into the fletchings of previously fired darts is a real problem.
In other words, accuracy is so high that hitting the same spot on the target happens routinely.
Doing that will break the plastic fletching of the previously fired dart.
He has figured out how to extrude infinite fletchings from bits of plastic in our recycling bins. He affixes them to the darts with hot glue.
He sharpens the broadheads with a 2000 grit stone. Turns them into flying scalpels, basically.
The Cold Steel unit is very high quality. Light weight aluminum construction. Breaks down into two sections. Has reinforced coupler where the two sections join together. Made in Taiwan = quality.
It was the lethal vulnerability of the lungs that shocked me the most about this; don’t the ribs offer any protection?
