Italy: Gypsy Vaccination Scheme Starts

Italy’s Red Cross has launched its biggest vaccination programme since the second world war, with the goal of immunising several thousand gypsy children living in camps around Rome.
The operation began at Casilino 900, a camp on the eastern outskirts of the capital that is believed to be one of the largest gypsy settlements in Europe. Some two dozen doctors were among 200 Red Cross volunteers that included clowns to provide entertainment in one of the big tents erected for the exercise.
One of my office mates has a baby girl born in October 2008. I think she told me little R, has a list of 30 vaccinations to take before she is a year old. I about puked on my shoes.
My friend tells me poor little R cries and cries and cries and won’t even nurse after she gets one of her shots.
No fucking wonder.
Yes, the mothers breast feed the babies after the shots and the babies learn to associate breast feeding with pain. Some will stop breast feeding completely. This happened to someone we know.
I can’t believe the number of vaccines they want an infant to take. I believe in selective vaccination, assuming you can find vaccines that don’t have a lot of crap in them, and not even that for infants. My god, how crazy have we become? And anyway, as long as they breastfeed (which should be at least a year) they have the mother’s immunity.
