Israel Attacks Syrian Military HQ in Damascus

Israel launched a series of air strikes Wednesday in the heart of Damascus, part of a campaign that it said is intended to defend the Druze – who also form a substantial community in Israel – and to push Islamic militants away from its border.
The strikes hit the Syrian army headquarters in Damascus, leaving one dead and 18 wounded, according to the Syrian health ministry. Another strike hit near the presidential palace in the hills outside of Damascus.
Israel had previously warned the Islamist-led government to leave the Druze minority alone in its Sweida heartland, where a war monitor says sectarian clashes have killed nearly 250 people.
Israel’s army said it had also struck a “military target” in the area of Syria’s presidential palace in Damascus on Wednesday, after earlier announcing it had hit the military headquarters in the capital.
