    I’ve had the sense for a long time that the IEEE was one of the best scientific organizations in the world–largely because of their allowance of a discussion on electric plasma in space over the years–which has been massively suppressed otherwise.

    “The Starlink constellation performed 300k collision avoidance maneuvers in 2025” and “Starcloud’s initial proposed station exceeds 113 million kilograms”. So, if you don’t do any avoidance maneuvers, how long until the Kessler Effect would be reached?

    Is all the hype around orbital data centers just to provide cover for launching a bunch of military tech?

    Knowing that Starlink was never just about providing better Internet access to people in rural areas, your question is definitely a good one!

    I have no idea what they’re actually planning re: this space datacenter hype.

    There’s a long way to go before any of it happens. It relies on SpaceX Starship. If you watch the Starship videos, re-entry causes a lot of ablation of the heat shield and control surfaces.

    That thing is nowhere near being, “rapidly reusable,” as Musk says it needs to be.
