UK Population Must Fall to 30 Million, Says Porritt

JONATHON PORRITT, one of Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society.
Porritt’s call will come at this week’s annual conference of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT), of which he is patron.
The trust will release research suggesting UK population must be cut to 30m if the country wants to feed itself sustainably.

From current estimates, there’s something like 61 million people living in the United Kingdom.
Volunteers? Anyone? Volunteers?

How long do you think it’ll take before the UK starts instituting a PRC-style One Child policy? Like the picture in the Wikipedia article says, “For a prosperous, powerful nation and a happy family, please use birth planning.”
Or maybe Porritt’s idea is to treat this like redundancies in an office. Early “retirement” plans, payouts, etc.
These sort of articles puzzle me. My bus to work passes a local primary school, all the children in the playground are the children of migrants. I watch the women in head-scarves taking their children to school, most have another in a pram or pushchair and they are all clearly pregnant. Somehow I’m wondering how Mr Porritt is going to convince this section of society to change their lifestyle?
