People May Be Arbitrarily Stopped and Searched by Police in All of London
June 1st, 2007Via: BBC:
Under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000, police officers may randomly stop someone without reasonable suspicion, providing the area has been designated a likely target for an attack.
The power is currently in force across the whole of London.

The worlds just getting nuttier and nuttier everyday.
The only thing I “like” about Britain is that it allows us to peek approximately 2 years into the future, by seeing how fucked it will be for us, by observing their present. It’s a decent head’s up
It’s already that way in the USA, it’s just not publicized in our fine media. Cop stops your car, or you, and asks: “Can I search your car/you?” – – you say “no” or “Yes – – if we live in a fascist country”. Cop gets dog. Dog alerts (they always “alert”). Cop searches your car/you. Depending on how “uncooperative” you have been – -cop then plants substance – – you go to jail, car is forfeited to the State . . . just because our fine media is not reporting this or you are not seeing it on “Law & Order” does not mean that folks, living in other than the gated communities that are now segregated from the rest of us peons, are not NOW subjected to this . . . .
You’re so right, tmb. Mark had a good point that it does give you insight as to what will be “visible” within a couple of years. I’d also add that California is typically another state where you can get a read on what the rest of us will be forced to swallow.
Mark, if you REALLY want to see what the future holds for the US (actually the west as a whole) just look at South Africa. South Africas present is the wests future.
But we can’t give in to it. People need to know their rights and stop talking with police. There is no such thing as a casual conversation with a law enforcement officer. Anything you say WILL be used against you.
SW – could you elaborate on that or provide links? I know nothing about South Africa.. what’s it like?
Just a heads up here, I’ve heard this tactic used by police before. Officer shows up at your residence and says he had a 911 call from that location. They ask if you mind if they just take a “quick look around” to “clear” the premises. Now, I think that here in the land of the free, police are still required to have a warrant to search a residence, but the line is becoming blurry on this. Anyway, there is no need for them to enter the residence to clear it. all they need is access to the land line to call the 911 dispatcher, and they can negate that line as the source of the call. Make ’em work for it.
Yes, the now famous “911 hangup” has become the great pretext for gaining access to residences and businesses without a warrant. The position of the cops is that a “911 hangup” establishes probable cause to believe that someone inside called for help and is now disabled, being held against their will, etc. The truth is that most “911 hangup” calls are kids playing with the phone, adults dialing the wrong number, etc. Also, some cordless phone systems can be accessed from other locations with other cordless handsets. There is also the fact that even disabled cell phones can access 911. If one of these happens to call from a car going down the street in front of your house, your residence is now targeted by the Gestapo and you have a knock at your door or a battering ram breaking it down and guns pointed at you and your family. Get the picture?
Interesting to see American comments on the chilling situation unfolding here in the UK. So, how many of you think you can hole up in a secure retreat in the Cascades / Rockies / Alaska / whatever survival retreat location you deem best, once martial law has been declared and a directive to find and ID every citizen is issued? True, “the end of the world as we know it” is generally assumed by many libertarians to be peak oil related, which may well be so. But I believe the clearest and most present danger is the encroaching police state in the UK, USA and thereafter probably Canada and the European continent.
