U.S. States Renamed for Countries with Similar GDPs

Several people are commenting around the Intertubes that they’d like to see a per capita version of this. Me too.

But for those of us who look at the U.S. economy, year in and year out and wonder, “How? Just… How can it be? How can it continue?”

This is how, in one picture.

The creator of this map has had the interesting idea to break down that gigantic US GDP into the GDPs of individual states, and compare those to other countries’ GDP. What follows, is this slightly misleading map – misleading, because the economies both of the US states and of the countries they are compared with are not weighted for their respective populations.

Well, those are indeed some strange maps. Putting Hawaii on the same level field as Nigeria is just bizarre. The GDP may be the same, but the obviously staggering population and income variances make this only a mental exercise and not something to ponder on for too long.
