“The Paper Passport’s Days Are Numbered – Despite New Privacy Risks”

December 27th, 2024

Via: Wired:

In a matter of years, no matter where you live or travel, your face will likely be your new passport.

For centuries, people have used some form of passport while moving from place to place. But the widespread standardization of passports as we know them today didn’t really begin until after World War 1, when passports were commonly used as a security measure and to deter spies entering a country. Even then, some considered passports to be an “anachronism in the modern world.”

But the use of paper passports—which were first digitized as “e-Passports” with NFC chips in 2006—is slowly undergoing one of its biggest transformations to date. The travel industry, airports, and governments are working to remove the need to show your passport while flying internationally. Eventually, you may not need to carry your passport at all.

Instead, face recognition technology and smartphones are increasingly being used to check and confirm your identity against travel details before you can fly.

Demand At Food Banks Has Soared To Record Levels All Over The United States

December 25th, 2024

Via: Economic Collapse Blog:

Why is demand at food banks all over the country higher than it has ever been before? The media keeps insisting that economic conditions are just fine, but it has become quite obvious to everyone that this is not true. In particular, the rising cost of living has been absolutely crushing households from coast to coast. In the old days, most of the people that would show up at food banks were unemployed. But now food banks are serving large numbers of people that actually do have jobs but that don’t make enough to pay for all of the basics. The ranks of the “working poor” are growing very rapidly, and this is creating an unprecedented crisis all over America.

Is OpenAI’s o3 Model AGI?

December 21st, 2024

I doubt it’s actually AGI, but it looks impressive. If it’s any consolation, they let it use a very nontrivial amount of compute to pull this off.

If/when this thing gets the ability to iterate on itself… Well, that’s probably not going to go well for humanity.

In the demo, they show it generating and then running code on a client side system.

If it decided to sneak some sort of malicious payload into the code that runs on an external client…

Yeah. Pretty wild. There had better not be some weird homunculus hiding in there with plans to escape or cause chaos.
