I received an astonishing email response from the show’s producer, Mark Cubey. While it verifies what we already knew—that the interview with Sally Fallon Morell was cancelled because she is too controversial—the frank admission of this by the show’s producer depicts a level of banality that I have never encountered from anyone in the mainstream media before.

So, rather than addressing core issues about nutrition, and people’s rights to purchase the foods they choose, the Kim Hill show delivered a lukewarm Velveeta enema about fly fishing to the people of New Zealand instead. Have a nice day.

Thanks for your email, and apologies for the delayed response (sorry, but I don’t work Mondays and inevitably turn up on Tuesday to around fifty listener enquiries on top of my usual tasks…)
The reasons I cancelled the interview with Sally Ann Morell after it was previewed in the Listener (they have lead times a few weeks in advance of publication), were as follows.
My research for the interview uncovered widespread antagonism in the scientific and nutritional communities to the policies that Sally advocates (NZ responses also appeared in the big Dominion Post on Sally on Saturday 17 March). Kim doesn’t’ like these kind of situations, as they cannot usually be properly addressed within the format limits of the Saturday programme, and can turn antagonistic and difficult… which has happened on occasion during my time on the programme over the last five years or so (most recently Thomas Friedman). These do no one (guests, host, listeners) any favours.
Such interviews invariably draw flak from listeners, as well as demands for right of reply and so forth. As such, Kim isn’t keen to do these kinds of interview, as we only have four hours a week for guests (as opposed to the longer time options of Nine to Noon or Morning Report which can deal with such issues over a week and in a way that better suits their respective formats).
So, despite my initial thoughts that Sally Fallon Morell would be suitable for us, I changed my mind.
I explained this to Caroline Marshall, one of the people involved in organising Sally’s NZ tour. Caroline understood my reasons for doing this, and it wasn’t a problem for her.

Visa’s Secret Data Center

Prisons are easier to enter than Visa’s top-secret Operations Center East, its biggest, newest and most advanced U.S. data center.
The 8-acre facility looks like any other industrial park in a sleepy suburb. But the serene setting masks hundreds of cameras and a crack team of former military personnel. Hydraulic bollards beneath the road leading to the OCE can be quickly raised to stop an intruding car going 50 mph. Any speed faster, and the car can’t navigate a hairpin turn, sending it into a drainage pond that functions as a modern-day moat.
The data center resembles a fortress, with dogged attention to detail. It can withstand earthquakes and hurricane-force winds of up to 170 mph. A 1.5-million-gallon storage tank cools the system. Diesel generators onsite have enough power, in the event of an outage, to keep the center running for nine days. They generate enough electricity for 25,000 households.
Once you get clearance from a guard station, get an OK from a roving security guy in a golf cart, and surrender a photo and fingerprint inside, the adventure begins.
There are plenty of reasons for the airtight security. Billions, in fact.
In an era when mobile purchases on smartphones and tablets are expected to grow 73% to $11.6 billion in the U.S. this year, security is a necessary obsession at OCE — and an acknowledgment of the perils posed by profit-minded hackers.
Mobile payments are just a trickle of the more than 200 million daily transactions processed here and at one other Visa data center in North America.
“We’re at the forefront of data centers,” says Rick Knight, head of global systems operations and engineering. “Now everyone has to do it.”
U.S. Pays Out $860,000 to Families of Afghanistan Massacre Victims

The United States gave $860,000 to the families of people in Afghanistan killed or wounded in a shooting rampage that is being blamed on U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, two Afghan officials said Sunday.
The money includes $50,000 for each of 16 people who were killed, as well as $10,000 for each of six who was injured, the provincial council members said.
The American official who handed over the money said it was not compensation, but the U.S. government offering to help the victims and their families, Kandahar provincial council member Haji Nyamat Khan said.
But a spokesman for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force, Col. Gary Kolb, said the money was compensation.
It was not immediately clear if the word used to describe the payment had legal significance in Afghanistan, where “blood money” can replace a trial or punishment of a killer.
Afghans are insisting that the suspect be returned to Afghanistan to face trial, with villagers and lawmakers questioning the U.S. military’s account of what happened. But a military official in Afghanistan has said that Bales will be tried in the United States.
Khan, the local official, said the money was paid in Afghan currency and handed over in Kandahar city.
He did not name the American official involved in the meeting.
Bales has been charged with 17 counts of murder, and could face the death penalty if convicted of any of them.
Holy Rollers
March 25th, 2012I backed Holy Rollers on Kickstarter, and I just got to download and watch the film.
You guys might be wondering why I would support a film about Christians, but the fact is that I’m just interested in stories about people who attempt to find cracks in The Matrix, whether they believe in a vengeful skygod, or not.
I also considered counting for a while, in the late 1990s, and, to my surprise, my mom laughed, sat me down and had a little talk with me. She didn’t discourage me from trying it. She just told me what would happen.
“How do you know so much about this?” I asked my mom.
It turned out that my mom had dated a very good counter in the 1960s, who also happened to be a “rocket scientist” at JPL. She said that he would get booted from one casino and by the time he arrived at the next one, guys would be waiting for him to turn him away. She told me all about the costumes and cat and mouse antics familiar to all counters. Again, this was the 1960s, decades before automated facial recognition systems.
So, I was far more interested in Holy Rollers as a movie about blackjack, rather than as a movie about Christians. I really enjoyed seeing how they tried to manage the team, test players, handle cash, evade casino security and all the rest of the nuts and bolts of it. I would have liked to have seen more of the nuts and bolts, particularly how the team worked live sessions. (They left out a lot, but this wasn’t intended to be an instructional video.) I laughed as I watched how ridiculously fast they were getting backed off toward the end.
My mom died back in 2003, but I could see her subdued, “I told you so,” smile very clearly.

Early Exposure to Germs Has Lasting Benefits

Exposure to germs in childhood is thought to help strengthen the immune system and protect children from developing allergies and asthma, but the pathways by which this occurs have been unclear. Now, researchers have identified a mechanism in mice that may explain the role of exposure to microbes in the development of asthma and ulcerative colitis, a common form of inflammatory bowel disease.
In a study published online today in Science1, the researchers show that in mice, exposure to microbes in early life can reduce the body’s inventory of invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, which help to fight infection but can also turn on the body, causing a range of disorders such as asthma or inflammatory bowel disease.
The study supports the ‘hygiene hypothesis’, which contends that such auto-immune diseases are more common in the developed world where the prevalence of antibiotics and antibacterials reduce children’s exposure to microbes.
“We as a species are not exposed to the same germs that we were exposed to in the past,” says study co-author Dennis Kasper, a microbiologist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.
The researchers induced two groups of mice — germ-free (GF) mice, which are raised in a sterile environment, and specific-pathogen-free mice raised under normal laboratory conditions — to develop forms of asthma or ulcerative colitis. GF mice had more iNKT cells in their lungs and developed more severe disease symptoms, indicating that exposure to microbes was somehow influencing iNKT cell levels and making the GF mice more susceptible to inflammatory diseases.
The study also found that a lack of exposure in early life could not be compensated for by introducing the GF mice to a broader range of microbes in adulthood.
Hitachi Surveillance System Can Recognize a Face From 36 Million Others in One Second

Face-recognition technology is rapidly evolving as evidenced by this new surveillance camera system. It can not only recognize specific faces, but is able to compare a single face to 36 million others in just one second.
The system, made by Hitachi Kokusai Electric and reported by DigInfo TV, was shown at a security trade show recently. It’s able to achieve its blazing speed by not wasting time on image processing — it takes visual data directly from the camera to compare the face in real time. The software also groups faces with similar features, so it’s able to narrow down the field very quickly.
When the system finds candidates that could be a match to the person being scanned, it immediately displays their thumbnails. The user can then review the archived footage and see if the person is, say, a repeat customer if it’s being used in a business. And the usefulness to law enforcement is pretty obvious.

Jon S. Corzine, MF Global Holding Ltd. (MFGLQ)’s chief executive officer, gave “direct instructions” to transfer $200 million from a customer fund account to meet an overdraft in a brokerage account with JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), according to a memo written by congressional investigators.
Edith O’Brien, a treasurer for the firm, said in an e-mail quoted in the memo that the transfer was “Per JC’s direct instructions,” according to a copy of the memo obtained by Bloomberg News. The e-mail, dated Oct. 28, was sent three days before the company collapsed, the memo says. The memo does not indicate whether that phrase was the full text of the e-mail or an excerpt.
O’Brien’s internal e-mail was sent as the New York-based broker found intraday credit lines limited by JPMorgan, the firm’s clearing bank as well as one of its custodian banks for segregated customer funds, according to the memo, which was prepared for a March 28 House Financial Services subcommittee hearing on the firm’s collapse. O’Brien is scheduled to testify at the hearing after being subpoenaed this week.
“Over the course of that week, MF Global (MFGLQ)’s financial position deteriorated, but the firm represented to its regulators and self-regulatory organizations that its customers’ segregated funds were safe,” said the memo, written by Financial Services Committee staff and sent to lawmakers.
Steven Goldberg, a spokesman for Corzine, said in a statement that Corzine “never gave any instruction to misuse customer funds and never intended anyone at MF Global to misuse customer funds.”
