Doctors said 2-year-old Cash Hyde would likely die after they found a stage 4 brain tumor surrounding his optic nerve just a year ago this week.
And he nearly did. After being subjected to seven different chemotherapy drugs, the little boy from Missoula, Montana suffered septic shock, a stroke and pulmonary hemorrhaging.
Cash was so sick he went 40 days without eating. His organs were threatening to shut down. His father, Mike Hyde, intervened, slipping cannabis oil into his son’s feeding tube.
In Montana, medical marijuana is legal. Hyde had used it himself to treat his attention deficit disorder. When Cash was diagnosed in May 2010, Mike got him a marijuana card and purchased the drug from his own supplier.
Cash, now 3, made a miraculous recovery at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, but his father’s bold action — taken behind doctors’ backs — has raised serious questions about a parent’s role in medical treatment.
Hyde said he believes it was the marijuana oil that helped Cash eat again and that the drug — illegal in most states, including Utah, can cure cancer.
“Not only was it helpful,” Hyde, 27, told ABCNews.com. “It was a godsend.”
Dr. Linda Granowetter, a professor of pediatrics at New York University and chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, told ABCNews.com that Hyde’s intervention was “fascinating” but “somewhat bothersome.”

Britain: Babies to Be Given Anti-Obesity Drugs in the Womb

One hundred obese mums-to-be will be given Metformin as part of a three-year study to tackle obesity rates and reduce the number of difficult births.
Patients at Liverpool Women’s Hospital will be given the drug to reduce the food supply to their unborn babies, although it will not help the mums themselves to lose weight.
Leading the trial, senior lecturer in obstetrics, Dr Andrew Weeks, said: “It is about trying to improve outcomes in pregnancy for women who are overweight.
“The problem is babies tend to be larger and many of the downsides of being overweight during pregnancy relate to the birth.”
Metformin reduces blood sugar levels which are passed onto babies in the womb, and is already regularly used to treat diabetic mums-to-be, as well as diabetics in general.

Nobody minds you taking photos of the Broad Street building’s striking neoclassical façade, but try photographing the Mahwah data centre and you’ll find the police quickly taking an interest: it’s classed as part of the critical infrastructure of the United States.
Silver: 38.2% Fibonacci Retracement Capped Dead Cat Bounce

The difference between the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level and the high on the candle was just 4.8 cents. Man, that thing weirds me out sometimes.

So, what’s next?
I don’t know. The Magic 8 ball is pretty blurry now, but here are some guesses:
Short term (days to weeks), I see the technical picture as having more bearish arguments than bullish ones. The full weight of the unwinding weekly stochastic slow is bearing down on it now, and the dollar bounce is continuing.
Here are some weekly support levels to watch on silver. A breakdown of $33.05 opens to the door to $31.23. Next would come $26.37, and if that holds, it will probably form the right shoulder of a head and shoulders pattern—but that’s getting way ahead of the market. $33.05 has to go first.

I put the 50% retracement at $32.20 (move spanning the low from the Feb 1 2010 weekly candle to the high on Apr 25 2011). So, bears, watch out for that range between about $31.20 to $32.20. There’s a trendline coming up and the 50% fib fan line (not on the chart) is around there as well. Bottom line: If they’re going to light off a short squeeze, $31.20 to $32.20 would be a good place to do it.
Postal Service Reports Billions in Losses

The Postal Service is continuing to hemorrhage money, reporting a loss Tuesday of more than $2 billion over the first three months of the year and warning it could be forced to default on federal payments.
Such a default would not interrupt mail service to millions of Americans, but it could further hobble an agency struggling with a sharp decline in mail because of the Internet and a tough economy.
Japan Scraps Plans to Expand Nuclear Power Capacity

Japan will scrap a plan to obtain half of its electricity from nuclear power and will instead promote renewable energy and conservation as a result of its ongoing nuclear crisis, the prime minister said Tuesday.
Naoto Kan said Japan needs to “start from scratch” on its long-term energy policy after the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was heavily damaged by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami and began leaking radiation.
Nuclear plants supplied about 30 percent of Japan’s electricity, and the government had planned to raise that to 50 percent by 2030.
Kan told a news conference that nuclear and fossil fuel used to be the pillars of Japanese energy policy but now the government will add two more pillars: renewable energy such as solar, wind and biomass, and an increased focus on conservation.

Ireland: Government Raids Private Pensions to Pay for Spending

The Irish government plans to institute a tax on private pensions to drive jobs growth, according to its jobs program strategy, delivered today.
Without the ability sell debt due to soaring interest rates, and with severe spending rules in place due to its EU-IMF bailout, Ireland has few ways of spending to stimulate the economy. Today’s jobs program includes specific tax increases, including the tax on pensions, aimed at keeping government jobs spending from adding to the national debt.
The tax on private pensions will be 0.6%, and last for four years, according to the report.

PIMCO Raises Bet Against U.S. Government Debt

PIMCO’s Bill Gross, the manager of the world’s largest bond fund, raised his bet against U.S. government-related debt in April to 4 percent from 3 percent, according to the company’s website on Monday.
The increase, albeit small, follows Gross’ move to ratchet up his bearishness in March by taking his initial short position in U.S. government-related debt, which includes Treasuries, TIPS, agencies, interest rate swaps, Treasury futures and options and FDIC-guaranteed corporate securities.
