Could AI Robots with Lasers Make Herbicides – and Farm Workers – Obsolete?
August 4th, 2024Via: Los Angeles Times:
The smell of burnt vegetation wafted through a lettuce field here one recent summer morning as nearly 200 farmers, academics and engineers gathered to witness the future of automated agriculture.
Thirteen hulking machines with names like “Weed Spider” and “Mantis” crawled through rows of romaine. One used artificial intelligence cameras to scan the crops and spray them with herbicides. Another zapped weeds with lasers. Yet another deployed robotic arms to cultivate and pick through the foliage.
…
The massive machine uses deep-learning AI models to scan fields and identify weeds in real time before vaporizing them with more than 30 high-powered lasers, all while protecting the crop. The company says it reduces farming costs, increases yields and improves soil health while avoiding the need for chemical herbicides.
“This is the future,” Mahoney said as the LaserWeeder moved through the lettuce, leaving small wisps of smoke in its wake.
Cold War: FBI Ran Operation That Sold Sabotaged Electronics to Soviets
August 4th, 2024Was the purpose of the operation described below actually meant to thwart the Soviet Union?
It was probably the opposite.
Even if some of the equipment didn’t work properly, much could still be gleaned from having it in hand.
The USSR was a disaster and would have collapsed decades earlier if it wasn’t for assistance from Western countries.

“We were in a position to guarantee that the technology, even though it would be illegal to export, it could safely find its way to the end user in Eastern Europe, whether it was East German or Bulgarian — you never knew exactly who’s loading dock was going to end up on,” recalled Ed Appel, a former senior FBI official. Appel helped run Intering from Washington, where he then oversaw Bulgarian and East German operations for the bureau.

Children of Freed Sleeper Agents Learned They Were Russians on the Flight, Kremlin Says
August 2nd, 2024Via: Reuters:
A family of Russian sleeper agents flown to Moscow in the biggest East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War were so deep under cover that their children found out they were Russians only after the flight took off, the Kremlin said on Friday.
“Before that, they didn’t know that they were Russian and that they had anything to do with our country,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“And you probably saw that when the children came down the plane’s steps that they don’t speak Russian and that Putin greeted them in Spanish. He said ‘buenas noches’.”
…
Among those released were the so-called “illegal” sleeper agents – the Dultsevs, a husband and wife convicted by a court in Slovenia of pretending to be Argentinians in order to spy, who were flown back to Russia with their two children.
Peskov said that while the couple were being held in jail they were given only restricted access to their children, and feared they could lose their parental rights.
“The children asked their parents yesterday who it was that was meeting them (in Moscow). They didn’t even know who Putin was. This is how the ‘illegals’ work. They make such sacrifices out of dedication to their work,” Peskov said.
