Saudi Judge Considers Severing Spine of Attacker Who Paralyzed Man

In a variation of the ancient eye-for-an-eye punishment, a judge in Saudi Arabia has asked hospitals whether doctors would sever the spinal cord of an attacker convicted of paralyzing a man with a cleaver.
The Arabic-language newspaper Okaz reported that one hospital in the northwestern province of Tabuk said it could perform the operation, while a prominent hospital in Riyadh refused, on apparent ethical grounds, saying “inflicting such harm is not possible.”
Abdul-Aziz al-Mutairi, 22, was left paralyzed and subsequently lost a foot after a fight more than two years ago, his older brother, Khaled al-Mutairi, told the Associated Press. He said the assailant, whom he and the paper did not identify, was sentenced to 14 months in prison, released after seven months in an amnesty and now teaches at a university.
Under Islamic (sharia) law in Saudi Arabia, victims can ask that criminals receive punishments similar to the harm they inflicted. It is not uncommon for thieves to have their hands cut off.
“We are asking for our legal right under Islamic law,” Khaled al-Mutairi said. “There is no better word than God’s word — an eye for an eye.”
Judge Saoud bin Suleiman al-Youssef sent letters to several hospitals in and outside the region, Emirates 24/7 says. A verdict is pending.

Now two Israeli groups seeking to gain the upper hand in the online debate have launched a course in “Zionist editing” for Wikipedia, the online reference site.
Yesha Council, representing the Jewish settler movement, and the rightwing Israel Sheli (My I srael) movement, ran their first workshop this week in Jerusalem, teaching participants how to rewrite and revise some of the most hotly disputed pages of the online reference site.
“We don’t want to change Wikipedia or turn it into a propaganda arm,” says Naftali Bennett, director of the Yesha Council. “We just want to show the other side. People think that Israelis are mean, evil people who only want to hurt Arabs all day.”

McDonald’s Sells Yuan Bonds in Hong Kong, First by Foreign Firm

McDonald’s Corp., the world’s largest restaurant chain, became the first foreign non-financial company to sell yuan-denominated bonds in Hong Kong.
McDonald’s, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, sold 200 million yuan ($29 million) of 3 percent notes due in September 2013, offer manager Standard Chartered Plc said in an e-mailed statement today.
The issue “opens up more potential issuers to tap this market, especially those who have sizable operations in China,” said Arthur Lau, a Hong-based fixed-income fund manager at JF Asset Management Ltd.

McDonald’s sold its bonds in a private placement to Hong Kong institutional and professional investors, it said in a separate statement today. Money raised will provide working capital for expansion in China, where it will open as many as 175 restaurants this year, according to the statement.

Plastic Surgeon Crashes Vehicle and Dies Moments After Twitter Session About Dog

Police in California are investigating if famed plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan’s death on Monday in a car crash in Malibu was the result of distracted driving from texting and tweeting at the wheel.

Ryan died while driving the Pacific Coast Highway when his Jeep Wrangler went off the road, landing on its rooftop. Only moments before, Ryan was sending pictures and updates to his Twitter page, including one about his dog, which read, “Border collie Jill surveying the view from atop the sand dune.”
Before that, Ryan wrote, “After 25 years of driving by, I finally hiked to the top of the giant sand dune on the PCH west of Malibu.”
Authorities have yet to determine if his texting contributed to the crash.

No Charges in Pennsylvania School Laptop-Spying Case

Federal prosecutors will not file charges against a school district or its employees over the use of software to remotely monitor students.
U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger says investigators have found no evidence of criminal intent by Lower Merion School District employees who activated tracking software that took thousands of webcam and screenshot images on school-provided laptops.
A student and his family sued the district in February, claiming officials invaded his privacy by activating the software. That case continues.

Recovery: Jobless Claims in U.S. Rose to Highest Level Since November

Applications for unemployment benefits in the U.S. unexpectedly increased last week to the highest level since November, showing companies are stepping up the pace of firings as the economy slows.
Initial jobless claims rose by 12,000 to 500,000 in the week ended Aug. 14, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. Claims exceeded all estimates of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and compared with the median forecast of 478,000. The number of people receiving unemployment insurance fell, while those getting extended benefits increased.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says the U.S. Army has expressed willingness to discuss the online whistleblower’s request for help in reviewing classified documents from the Afghan war and removing information that could harm civilians.
Assange told The Associated Press by telephone that contact was established this week between WikiLeaks’ lawyers and the General Counsel of the U.S. Army. WikiLeaks has asked the Pentagon for help in reviewing the documents to purge the names of Afghan informants from the files.
WikiLeaks already has published 77,000 classified U.S. military reports covering the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010, an extraordinary disclosure which some say could expose human rights abuses across the NATO-led campaign.
On Sunday, WikiLeaks said it will publish its remaining 15,000 Afghan war documents within a month.
The supposed offer from the U.S. Army was surprising given the Pentagon’s original’s stance. The Pentagon has accused WikiLeaks of endangering the lives of soldiers and informants in the field, and demanded that WikiLeaks refrain from publishing any more secret data.

Dredging for navigation, oil and gas drilling and pipeline construction has ripped apart the estuary’s fragile system of fresh and saltwater marshes.
Between 1901, when drilling began in Louisiana, and the 1980s, the oil and gas industry laid tens of thousands of miles of pipelines and dredged 9,300 miles of canals in an industrial invasion of a wetland that once covered 3.2 million acres. Since the 1930s, more than a third of it has vanished, an area the size of Delaware. Each year, 15,300 acres more disappear, according to Louisiana’s Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast.
