UK Environment Czar Looking at Limiting Holiday Trips to Save CO2
February 10th, 2009Escape the UK by any means necessary. Just flee, while you still can. Save up your fart credits, your collapsing pounds, get tracked, traced, scanned, probed and recorded—do whatever is necessary—and run for your life.

The UK’s so-called “environment czar” last week raised the possibility of rationing air travel, limiting UK citizens to just a few vacation trips abroad by air per year in order to reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
Adair Turner, chairman of the independent Committee on Climate Change that advises UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, made the proposal before Parliament’s Environmental Audit Select Committee on Feb. 5. In remarks widely reported by UK media, Turner said, “We will have to constrain demand in an absolute sense with people not allowed to make as many journeys as they could in an unconstrained manner.”
The proposal was strongly condemned by FlyingMatters, a UK-based coalition of airlines, airports, aerospace manufacturers and other aviation- and tourism-related groups. “One always suspects with these half-baked proposals that the people who put them forward really intend them to apply to ordinary people, many of whom have only recently gained access to air travel, rather than to themselves,” the organization said in a statement.
Turner’s remarks came as a report from the TaxPayers’ Alliance revealed that the UK government spent £18.5 million ($26.9 million) on flights last year, a figure that does not include travel by the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence, according the Daily Mirror.
Fire Consumes WTC 7-Size Skyscraper, Building Does Not Collapse
February 10th, 2009Via: Infowars:
Giant flames engulf every floor of 44-story building and it remains standing, yet limited fires across just 8 floors of WTC 7 brought down building within 7 seconds on 9/11. How can NIST’s “new phenomenon” explain this one?
A fierce fire consumed all 44 floors of a skyscraper in Beijing today, shooting 30 foot flames into the air, but unlike the similarly-sized 47-story WTC 7, which suffered limited fires across just eight floors, the building in China did not collapse.
“The fire was burning from the ground floor to the top floor of the large building, the flames reflecting in the glass facade of the main CCTV tower next to the hotel and cultural center,” reports the New York Times.
“The 241-room Mandarin Oriental hotel in the building was due to open this year. Flames were spotted around 7:45 p.m. and within 20 minutes the fire had spread throughout the building, dominating that part of the city.”
“Hundreds of firefighting vehicles and police blocked off all approaches to the building – which was also set to house a luxury hotel due to be opened in 2009 – with flames appearing to leap 20 to 30 feet into the air,” adds The London Times.
Compare images of WTC 7 with those of the skyscraper fire in Beijing. Note that the Beijing skyscraper appears to be leaning due to the unorthodox design of the building – it did not suffer any kind of collapse.
To any sane and rational observer, which of these buildings would have been the most likely to collapse? And yet it was WTC 7 which collapsed within 7 seconds into its own footprint on 9/11. The Beijing skyscraper, though gutted by fire damage, remains standing.

Bushfires in Victoria, Australia
February 10th, 2009Big Picture series. Must see.
Via: Boston Globe:
The state of Victoria in southern Australia has recently been hit with hundreds of bush fires during a record-breaking heatwave – temperatures well above 38C (100F). Unfortunately, these fires have proved to be the deadliest in Australian history, with at least 166 deaths reported so far. The fires mostly appear to have been started by lightning – however a few appear to have been arson, and are under investigation – entire towns being declared crime scenes. Twenty-four fires are still burning, and authorities warn that the death toll will likely rise.
January Earnings
February 10th, 2009Earnings from all sources came to a total of $2482.11. January was one of the best months for earnings, ever. Many thanks to all contributors.
Becky and I are getting into a use-it-or-lose it mode with some of our savings. The curtain could come down at any moment, and we started thinking: What do we really need? We have just ordered a medium sized hen house and large solar hot water heater.
The hen house is a kitset that’s manufactured by Outpost Buildings. We bought the medium sized, two bay unit, which can accommodate up to 25 chickens. We’re guessing that we want to keep a maximum of 20 chickens, at some point. So, this one will give us plenty of room. We’re going to start out with a much more modest number of eight or so.
Kiwis interested in Outpost Buildings can check them out at RD1. Believe me, the paper catalogue is much better than their website.
The solar hot water heater we’re getting is the 30 tube monster sold by Sander’s Engineering. It weird to imagine being able to do laundry with hot water, or take hot baths without worrying about how badly Contact Energy is going to screw us over. Contact, you suck, everyone knows it, and we’re all sick of you. You’re almost as diabolical as Telecom. TrustPower is getting our business now.
I feel a lot better now. Sorry to go so far off the rails, but “the free market” has resulted in some interesting creatures in New Zealand.
Anyway, these are, by far, the largest purchases that we have made since we’ve been on our small farm. I’ve been holding off, hoarding cash. But it’s time to let it rip. Past time.
Next up will be the alkathene piping / irrigation project to bring the water down from our dam. Then a three bay shed. Then… Then…
Rep. Kanjorski: $550 Billion Disappeared in “Electronic Run On the Banks”

I wonder where Henry Paulson has slithered off to now…
More Americans Killed in Mexico Since 2004 Than in Any Other Country (Outside Military Combat Zones)
February 9th, 2009Via: AP:
More than 200 American citizens have been killed since 2004 in Mexico’s escalating wave of violence, amounting to the highest number of unnatural deaths in any foreign country outside military combat zones, according to the U.S. State Department.
…
The State Department tracks most American homicides abroad but releases few details about the deaths. Most, however, occurred in border cities, including Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez and Nuevo Laredo, where violence has spiked with drug cartel feuds in recent years.
The Chronicle analysis showed some American homicide victims were involved in organized crime. At least two dozen American victims were labeled as cartel hitmen, drug dealers, smugglers or gang members. Others were drug users or wanted for crimes in the United States.
But in at least 70 other cases, the Americans were killed in Mexico while there on seemingly innocent business: visiting family, vacationing or living and working there.
Secret Police Unit to Spy on British ‘Domestic Extremists’
February 9th, 2009This is a British Stasi force.
Via: Mail on Sunday:
A secret police intelligence unit has been set up to spy on Left-wing and Right-wing political groups.
The Confidential Intelligence Unit (CIU) has the power to operate across the UK and will mount surveillance and run informers on ‘domestic extremists’.
Its job is to build up a detailed picture of radical campaigners.
Targets will include environmental groups involved in direct action such as Plane Stupid, whose supporters invaded the runway at Stansted Airport in December.
The unit also aims to identify the ring-leaders behind violent demonstrations such as the recent anti-Israel protests in London, and to infiltrate neo-Nazi groups, animal liberation groups and organisations behind unlawful industrial action such as secondary picketing.
The CIU’s role will be similar to the ‘counter subversion’ functions formerly carried out by MI5.
The so-called reds under the bed operations focused on trade unionists and peace campaigners but were abandoned by MI5 to concentrate on Islamic terrorism.
The unit is being set up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) and will be based at Scotland Yard in Central London.
An internal police job advertisement for the ‘Head of Confidential Intelligence Unit’, obtained by The Mail on Sunday, reveals key details of its wide-ranging powers.
The advert says the unit will work closely with Government departments, university authorities and private sector companies to ‘remove the threat of criminality and public disorder that arises from domestic extremism’.
The CIU will also use legal proceedings to prevent details of its operations being made public.
Its chief will play an active part in obtaining Public Interest Immunity Certificates from Government Ministers, and will attend ‘legal meetings regarding sensitive source material’.
Another vacancy, for an administration officer, states that the CIU will be involved in the collection of ‘secret data’.
The job descriptions indicate that the postholders will have links with MI5.
Details of the senior vacancies were circulated to police forces last year – the closing date for applications was November 14, 2008.
The top job was open to officers of at least the rank of Detective Chief Inspector.
MI5’s counter subversion role led to it compiling files on Left-wing student activists in the Sixties and Seventies.
These included records on Jack Straw and Peter Mandelson.
And Now… The Terrorist White List
February 9th, 2009Via: Wired:
The House overwhelmingly adopted legislation this week mandating the creation of a new kind of terrorist watchlist: a database of people who aren’t terrorists, but are routinely flagged at airports anyway.
The U.S. government maintains a list of about a million names of suspected terrorists that is crosschecked with passenger names ahead of airline boarding. The list has been dogged for years by sloppy name matches that have ensnared innocent travelers, children, prominent politicians and government officials, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ secretary of education and all men named David Nelson.
Under the new plan, approved late Tuesday 413-3, innocent victims of the terrorist watchlist must prove to the Department of Homeland Security, through an undetermined appeals process, that they are not terrorists. They would then get their names put on what the legislation calls the “Comprehensive Cleared List.”
The legislation is another attempt to assist wrongly flagged passengers and would supersede the troubled DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program, which has been criticized for being slow or unresponsive to flier complaints.
The FAST Redress Act, if approved by the Senate, requires the government to report within 240 days on its progress in implementing the new list.
In Florida, Despair and Foreclosures
February 9th, 2009Via: New York Times:
Welcome to the American dream in high reverse. Lehigh Acres is one of countless sprawling exurbs that the housing boom drastically reshaped, and now the bust is testing whether the experience of shared struggle will pull people together or tear them apart.
The changes in these mostly unincorporated areas outside cities like Charlotte, N.C., Las Vegas and Sacramento have been swift and vivid. Their best economic times have been immediately followed by their worst, as they have generally been the last to crest and the first to crash.
In Lehigh Acres, homes are selling at 80 percent off their peak prices. Only two years after there were more jobs than people to work them, fast-food restaurants are laying people off or closing. Crime is up, school enrollment is down, and one in four residents received food stamps in December, nearly a fourfold increase since 2006.
…
Residents remember the boom for its noise, with dump trucks lining the streets and power tools heard in nearly every neighborhood. Housing prices doubled, then tripled, and jobs were plentiful, nearly all of them tied to real estate.
Signs of trouble were ignored. “Sometimes houses would sell three or four times in a few months, and no one would move in,” Mr. Elliott said.
Then in 2007, it all went quiet. Houses stopped selling. Foreclosures multiplied. The median home price in the Fort Myers area dropped to $215,200 in December 2007, from a peak of $322,300 in December 2005. It had fallen to $106,900 two months ago.

U.S. Taxpayers Risk $9.7 Trillion on Bailouts as Senate Votes
February 9th, 2009Via: Bloomberg:
The stimulus package the U.S. Congress is completing would raise the government’s commitment to solving the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more than 90 percent of the nation’s home mortgages.
The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over the past two years and pledged to provide up to $5.7 trillion more if needed. The total already tapped has decreased about 1 percent since November, mostly because foreign central banks are using fewer dollars in currency-exchange agreements called swaps. The Senate is to vote early this week on a stimulus package totaling at least $780 billion that President Barack Obama says is needed to avert a deeper recession. That measure would need to be reconciled with an $819 billion plan the House approved last month.
Only the stimulus package to be approved this week, the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program passed four months ago and $168 billion in tax cuts and rebates approved in 2008 have been voted on by lawmakers. The remaining $8 trillion in commitments are lending programs and guarantees, almost all under the authority of the Fed and the FDIC. The recipients’ names have not been disclosed.
“We’ve seen money go out the back door of this government unlike any time in the history of our country,” Senator Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, said on the Senate floor Feb. 3. “Nobody knows what went out of the Federal Reserve Board, to whom and for what purpose. How much from the FDIC? How much from TARP? When? Why?”
