Is the New Zealand Real Estate Bubble the Biggest of Them All?
January 9th, 2007I’m shocked by the number of “For Sale” signs that have disappeared lately. For months, it seemed like every other property was for sale out here in the middle of nowhere. Not now. “Lifestyle blocks” are being snapped up, and prices continue to rise. It’s tough to imagine that flippers would be buying properties around here. No way, not this late in the game. And, again, not here. Yuppies looking for lattes have been known to disappear into the bush, never to be seen again. 😉
It’s something else, and I’m not sure what. It might be people fleeing Auckland. It might be Poms (the Kiwi/Aussie term for British people) fleeing their doomed country, pockets flush with sterling. It might be “smart money” looking to park their NZ dollars in real assets before any “disorderly transitions” occur in the fiat FOREX markets…
I really don’t know.

The Real Estate Institute is warning people not to expect houses to get cheaper in the near future.
Latest figures show the median house price in New Zealand is more than seven times the average salary – a 72% increase on five years ago and higher than in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
Institute president Murray Cleland says experts have been saying the bottom is going to fall out of the market for quite some time but out in the field there is no sign of the market slowing.
China: Power, Corruption and Lies
January 9th, 2007Via: Guardian:
Absolute power corrupts, and the Chinese Communist party has become one of the most corrupt organisations the world has ever witnessed. The combination of absolute power and an ideology that palpably no longer describes reality is a virus that is morally and psychologically undermining the regime. And if the regime wobbles, then its capacity to sustain the unsustainable economic structures will wobble and Leninist corporatism will unravel.
Bush’s Rush to Armageddon
January 9th, 2007Via: Consortium News:
George W. Bush has purged senior military and intelligence officials who were obstacles to a wider war in the Middle East, broadening his options for both escalating the conflict inside Iraq and expanding the fighting to Iran and Syria with Israel’s help.
On Jan. 4, Bush ousted the top two commanders in the Middle East, Generals John Abizaid and George Casey, who had opposed a military escalation in Iraq, and removed Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte, who had stood by intelligence estimates downplaying the near-term threat from Iran’s nuclear program.
Most Washington observers have treated Bush’s shake-up as either routine or part of his desire for a new team to handle his planned “surge†of U.S. troops in Iraq. But intelligence sources say the personnel changes also fit with a scenario for attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities and seeking violent regime change in Syria.
Bush appointed Admiral William Fallon as the new chief of Central Command for the Middle East despite the fact that Fallon, a former Navy fighter pilot and currently head of the Pacific Command, will oversee two ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The choice of Fallon makes more sense if Bush foresees a bigger role for two aircraft carrier groups now poised off Iran’s coastline, such as support for possible Israeli air strikes against Iran’s nuclear targets or as a deterrent against any overt Iranian retaliation.

Iran Threatens to Block Strait of Hormuz
January 9th, 2007If you haven’t read The Strait of Hormuz: It’s Not That Bad, It’s Worse, it might be worth checking out now. Additionally, when oil was trading near record highs, I wrote that oil could, “Easily go to $45 before it goes to $200.”
Oil is now trading around $55.
Could the world go from relatively plentiful short term supplies of oil, to a crisis?
Yes, and in a matter of minutes.
Via: DailyTimes:
TEHRAN: A senior officer in the volunteer Basij militia said on Monday Iran could block oil traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz if the West threatens its economy over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
“Given Iran’s authority over the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway to more than 40 percent of the world’s energy, we have become so strong that the world’s economic and energy security are in the hands of Iran,†deputy Basij commander General Majid Mir Ahmadi was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.
“We can exert pressure on the US and British economies as much as we ourselves are put under pressure,†he said. “US allies, especially those who host US military sites or facilitate American strategies against us, are exposed to our threat,†Mir Ahmadi added. “This is the Islamic republic’s strategy in the Persian Gulf – security for everyone or for nobody.â€
Democrats May Deny Funds for Iraq Surge
January 9th, 2007Knowing that the entire thing is theater, one can only assume that we’re going to see a false flag op soon; something that will shut down talk about ending the war. Woops, the Dems aren’t even considering scaling down the war. It wouldn’t take much to get even the crackpot left onboard this thing. Maybe They’ll kill two birds with one mushroom cloud, to provide an excuse for why the economy collapsed, since it’s collapsing already. Then the criminals in office can go home to their districts and say, “We had no choice. [Fill in the space between the brackets with some bullshit statement about bin Laden].”
Or maybe Iran will attack Israel or some U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf! <---- * wink * Get it? Yeah! That's the ticket.
Kick your heels up and get a big bowl of popcorn ready. It's going to be a good interesting show.

In a blunt warning to the White House, congressional Democrats said Monday they may seek to deny funds for the type of short-term troop buildup that President Bush is expected to announce for Iraq Wednesday night.
As Democrats began their first full week in the congressional majority, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he would “look at everything” to wind down the war effort, short of cutting off support for troops already deployed.
He said Bush’s expected call for an additional $100 billion for the war would receive close scrutiny.
Bush Senior Early CIA Ties Revealed
January 9th, 2007Via Real News:
Newly released internal CIA documents assert that former president George Herbert Walker Bush’s oil company emerged from a 1950’s collaboration with a covert CIA officer.
Bush has long denied allegations that he had connections to the intelligence community prior to 1976, when he became Central Intelligence Agency director under President Gerald Ford. At the time, he described his appointment as a ‘real shocker.’
But the freshly uncovered memos contend that Bush maintained a close personal and business relationship for decades with a CIA staff employee who, according to those CIA documents, was instrumental in the establishment of Bush’s oil venture, Zapata, in the early 1950s, and who would later accompany Bush to Vietnam as a “cleared and witting commercial asset†of the agency.
According to a CIA internal memo dated November 29, 1975, Bush’s original oil company, Zapata Petroleum, began in 1953 through joint efforts with Thomas J. Devine, a CIA staffer who had resigned his agency position that same year to go into private business. The ’75 memo describes Devine as an “oil wild-catting associate of Mr. Bush.†The memo is attached to an earlier memo written in 1968, which lays out how Devine resumed work for the secret agency under commercial cover beginning in 1963.
“Their joint activities culminated in the establishment of Zapata Oil,†the memo reads. In fact, early Zapata corporate filings do not seem to reflect Devine’s role in the company, suggesting that it may have been covert. Yet other documents do show Thomas Devine on the board of an affiliated Bush company, Zapata Offshore, in January, 1965, more than a year after he had resumed work for the spy agency.
Britons to be Scanned for FBI Database
January 9th, 2007And then it was too late…
Via: Guardian:
Millions of Britons who visit the United States are to have their fingerprints stored on the FBI database alongside those of criminals, in a move that has outraged civil rights groups.
The Observer has established that under new plans to combat terrorism, the US government will demand that visitors have all 10 fingers scanned when they enter the country. The information will be shared with intelligence agencies, including the FBI, with no restrictions on their international use.
US airport scanners now take only two fingerprints from travellers. The move to 10 allows the information to be compatible with the FBI database.
‘We are going to start testing at several airports,’ a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman confirmed. ‘It will begin some time this summer.’
Sources said 10 airports would initially be involved. The scheme will cover most of the major airports frequently used by British travellers, including New York, Washington and Miami. Countries subject to the new scheme include Britain, other European Union nations, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Last night the British civil rights group Liberty expressed astonishment at the plan, which will affect four million British travellers to the US. ‘This must be the Keystone Cops school of border control,’ said Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty. ‘Accumulating the fingerprints of millions of innocent passengers will not deter would-be suicide bombers.’
Security experts warned the scale of the scheme might jeopardise its success. ‘This maniacal proposal will turn thousands of law-abiding British travellers into terrorist suspects,’ said Simon Davies, head of Privacy International, a campaign against intrusive surveillance.
‘The technology at US airports will be far less reliable. That means anyone could be the victim of a false match, Davies said. ‘Be warned. A San Francisco Bay family holiday may easily become a nightmare.’
He predicted that airport queues would treble as a result of the scheme. ‘Taking fingerprints is a delicate and complex undertaking that can’t be rushed to keep queues short,’ he said.
A recent report by the civil liberties group Statewatch highlighted a Japanese study that tested 15 biometric systems and found 11 of them failed to detect ‘false’ fingerprints were being used in the form of a latex strip covering a person’s fingers.
Britons already have their credit card details and email accounts inspected by the American authorities following a deal between the EU and the Department of Homeland Security. Now passengers face having all their credit card transactions traced when using one to book a flight. And travellers giving an email address to an airline will be open to having all messages they send and receive from that address scrutinised.
The demands were disclosed in ‘undertakings’ given by the Department of Homeland Security to the EU and published by the Department for Transport after a request under the freedom of information legislation.
China Heralds Year of the Fluorescent Green Pig
January 8th, 2007Via: Yahoo/Reuters:
Chinese scientists have successfully bred partially green fluorescent pigs which they hope will boost stem cell research, Xinhua news agency said.
A research team at the Northeast Agricultural University in Harbin managed to breed three transgenic pigs by injecting fluorescent green protein into embryonic pigs, Xinhua quoted Professor Liu Zhonghua as saying.
“The mouth, trotters and tongue of the pigs are green under ultraviolet light,” said Liu.
Genetic material from jellyfish was injected into the womb of a sow which gave birth to the three pigs 114 days later in Harbin, he said.
China celebrates the start of the Year of the Pig in February.

Introducing iTaser: The ‘Stylish’ Stun Gun
January 8th, 2007It’s not really called iTaser, but it will probably be all the rage with the Hollywood slapper set anyway.
Via: BBC:
US stun gun maker Taser is unveiling a sleeker version of its controversial weapon aimed at safety and fashion conscious members of the public.
Available in pink, blue, silver and black, the gun fits into a handbag like a mobile phone. It will be launched at a Las Vegas electronics fair on Monday.
Taser guns temporarily incapacitate a target with up to 50,000 volts.
Critics have linked their use to dozens of deaths, but Taser says they save lives by reducing the use of firearms.
…
“The new device brings our life-saving technology into a new, consumer friendly form factor designed to provide a safer, effective means of personal protection,” said Taser’s chairman, Tom Smith.

Iraq War: Largest Displacement of People in Region Since the Creation of Israel in 1948
January 8th, 2007Mission accomplished…
Via: CNN:
As up to 50,000 Iraqis flee their homes every month, the U.N.’s refugee agency said Monday that it will seek $60 million this year to help the roughly 3.7 million people displaced by violence in the war-ravaged nation.
The problem is larger than mere displacement, A U.N. news release states, as women are increasingly forced to resort to prostitution and reports of child labor problems are on the rise.
Also, in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are seeking refuge, about 30 percent of Iraqi children are not in school and more than 10 percent of Iraqi families are headed by women.
Many Iraqis were displaced before the United States launched the Iraq war in 2003, but “increasing numbers of Iraqis are now fleeing escalating sectarian, ethnic and generalized violence,” according to the Web site of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The office estimates about 1.7 million Iraqis are currently displaced within the country, while another 2 million have fled to neighboring nations. The UNHCR estimates that 2.3 million people will be internally displaced by year’s end.
In 2006 alone, almost 500,000 Iraqis fled to other areas inside the country, the UNHCR estimated.
Three hundred thousand refugees have been displaced both internally and externally just since November, according to UNHCR reports. About 2,000 a day were arriving in Syria and about 1,000 a day were arriving in Jordan, according to a November report.
In a nation of about 26 million, “the current exodus is the largest long-term population movement in the Middle East since the displacement of Palestinians following the creation of Israel in 1948,” according to the UNHCR Web site.
