Ukraine Forces Take Control of Lyman, a Key Transport Hub Inside Territory Recently Annexed by Russia

Ukraine on Sunday claimed full control of the eastern logistics hub of Lyman, Kyiv’s most significant battlefield gain in weeks, providing a potential staging post for further attacks to the east while heaping further pressure on the Kremlin.

The stinging setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin came after he proclaimed the annexation of four regions covering nearly a fifth of Ukraine on Friday, an area that includes Lyman.

Putin Annexes Parts of Ukraine

September 30th, 2022

Update: Reaction from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

Putin’s speech with English translation:

Putin’s speech in Russian:

Via: Reuters:

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday presided over a ceremony to annex four Ukrainian regions partly occupied by his forces, escalating his seven-month war and taking it into an unpredictable new phase.

“This is the will of millions of people,” he said in a speech before hundreds of dignitaries in the St George’s Hall of the Kremlin.

The ceremony took place three days after the completion of hastily staged so-called referendums in which Moscow’s proxies in the occupied regions claimed majorities of up to 99% in favour of joining Russia.

Ukraine and Western governments said the votes, announced only 10 days ago, had been conducted at gunpoint and were bogus and illegitimate.

Ukraine, the United States and the head of the United Nations have all said the annexation ceremony has no legal value, with Kyiv describing it as a “Kremlin freak show”.

Kindle Scribe: Amazon Has Finally Announced a New Large Format E-Book Reader

September 29th, 2022

Today, Amazon announced a new, large format e-book reader called the Kindle Scribe.

About a decade ago, I bought a Kindle DX just before Amazon stopped making them. It wasn’t an easy choice. However, I (and members of my family) have used the device almost daily since.

I’ve had to become the household Kindle whisperer to keep it running. Of course, the device is designed to prevent users from opening it. I only took it apart/risked physically breaking it after it had bricked itself and I had nothing to lose.

Once inside, one can change out the—difficult to find—battery and hit the internal reset button.

Another time, after the small 5-way button broke in half, I delicately managed to superglue it back together.

I’ve found a specific USB charger that will charge the device more reliably than others.

On and on…

For a decade, Amazon refused to make another large format Kindle, despite the outcry from customers. Various other Chinese companies did produce devices with large e-paper displays, but the prices were always breath taking, and getting books purchased from Amazon onto those devices was… Let’s say that it was complicated. Sony released the DPT-RP1, and, in an apparent fit of madness, priced it at $699.

I was happy to keep fiddling with my ancient Kindle DX. And, who knows… Maybe I’ll be able to keep it on the rails for another decade!

But it’s nice to know that there is finally another large format Kindle available.

If you decide to buy a Kindle Scribe, please consider using the affiliate links above, as those will earn me a small commission.

Oh, yeah, you can write on it. I wouldn’t suggest doing that as every word will be accessible by Amazon. I’m a terrible salesman. While I’d like to earn a commission from you buying that thing, I need to warn you that Amazon will have total access to your marginalia and whatever else you write on it. *sigh*

Hundreds of people are feared dead, as 50 National Guard helicopters are starting the search and rescue for thousands who are stranded or missing in the aftermath of the catastrophic water damage and 155mph winds.

Russia: Ukraine Territory Annexation Ceremony Will Happen on Friday

September 29th, 2022

Via: ZeroHedge:

Russia has announced it is holding an annexation ceremony on Friday for the four regions which just conducted a 5-day referendum on whether to join the Russian Federation. It will mark the final move declaring the territories effectively under Kremlin control and its citizens as now Russian.

“Tomorrow in Saint George’s Hall at the Grand Kremlin Palace at 15:00 (12:00 GMT, or 8:00am US eastern) a signing ceremony will take place on the incorporation of the new territories into Russia,” a Kremlin statement previewed Thursday.

Additionally Putin is expected to make a “major” speech, according to the statement by Dmitry Peskov. Polls in the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, and in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, closed by Tuesday evening, and as expected returned an overwhelming “yes” vote.

A White House statement said in response to the “sham” referendums, “The United States will never recognize Ukrainian territory as anything other than part of Ukraine. Russia’s referenda are a sham – a false pretext to try to annex parts of Ukraine by force in flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Charter.”

It added, “We will continue to support the Ukrainian people and provide them with security assistance to help them defend themselves as they courageously resist Russia’s invasion.” About 18% of Ukraine will be claimed by Russia with this annexation announcement.

New Zealand Prime Minister Condemned for Calling to Regulate Free Speech as a ‘Weapon of War’ at UN

September 29th, 2022

Via: Fox:

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was blasted for comparing free speech online to “weapons of war” in a recent speech to the U.N. that critics called “authoritarian.”

Independent journalist and The Intercept co-founder Glenn Greenwald called out Ardern on Twitter.

“This is the face of authoritarianism – even though it looks different than you were taught to expect. And it’s the mindset of tyrants everywhere,” Greenwald wrote. “This is someone so inebriated by her sense of righteousness and superiority that she views dissent as an evil too dangerous to allow.”

Diesel Jack Media CEO and author Nick Palmisciano appeared to sarcastically skewer Ardern’s ideas.

“Yes, please bring on the government disinformation service. What could possibly go wrong? It’s not like we ever see government officials abuse their power to their own ends,” he wrote.

RedState deputy managing editor Brandon Morse warned, “This is the authoritarians admitting that your free speech is a threat to their rule.”

American Greatness CEO Ned Ryun made a similar comment, “She’s an absolute authoritarian. In fact, evil.”
