Homeowners under attack by a burglar don’t need to retreat or try to escape but rather stand their ground, and, if necessary, use deadly force. This is what a Florida sheriff told residents.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson told residents they’re “more than welcome” to shoot burglars at a Thursday press conference after a crazed man went on a home invasion spree in the northwestern portion of the Sunshine State.
“If somebody’s breaking into your house, you’re more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County, and we prefer that you do actually,” Johnson said.

A massive fire raged overnight into the morning and daytime hours at a Russian oil storage facility and logistics hub on Monday in the city of Bryansk, which lies a mere 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Disney Has Lost $34 Billion in Value Since Embarking on Culture War With Florida

Disney’s market cap has shrunk by nearly $34 billion since the company expressed its full-throated opposition to a Florida law banning instruction of gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools for kindergarten through third grade.
Florida lawmakers in March passed HB 1557, dubbed by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which was signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on March 28.
That same day, Disney waded deeply into the controversy, issuing a statement that was highly critical of HB 1557, saying it was the company’s objective to have it repealed. From March 28, the day the company issued the statement, to April 22, Disney’s market cap has fallen by roughly $33.9 billion.
Backers of the legislation say it gives parents more power around deciding how and when topics relating to LGBT issues can be introduced to their children. It also gives parents the opportunity to sue school districts for violations of the rules set out in the legislation.
“Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards,” the measure (pdf) reads.
Twitter Set to Accept Musk’s $43 Billion Offer

Twitter Inc is poised to agree a sale to Elon Musk for around $43 billion in cash, the price the CEO of Tesla has called his “best and final” offer for the social media company, people familiar with the matter said.
Twitter may announce the $54.20-per-share deal later on Monday once its board has met to recommend the transaction to Twitter shareholders, the sources said, adding it was still possible the deal could collapse at the last minute.
Russian Airlines Told To Prepare For World Without GPS

Russia’s air traffic regulator sent a warning to airlines about potential upcoming flights without using the American Global Positioning System (GPS).
Russian newspaper Izvestia reported Friday that a letter from the Federal Air Transport Agency (FATA) instructed national airlines to be aware of “GPS failures, degradations, and abnormal performance.”
Areas prone to “jamming” of GPS signals and spoofing attacks include Russia’s western enclave, the Kaliningrad region, over the Black Sea, east of Finland, and the Mediterranean.

Could soldiers in the future receive the power for their equipment from space? A team of researchers from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) have demonstrated the feasibility of terrestrial microwave power beaming by transmitting 1.6 kilowatts of power over one kilometer (km).
The achievement, by a team at the U.S. Army Research Field in Blossom Point, Maryland, is reportedly the most significant power beaming demonstration in nearly 50 years. Microwave power beaming is the efficient, point-to-point transfer of electrical energy across free space by a directive microwave beam.
2 Russian Oligarchs Found Dead Just One Day Apart

The bodies of two Russian oligarchs were found dead alongside their wives and children just one day apart, according to a handful of media reports.
The first was Vladislav Avayev, formerly vice president of Gazprombank. He was found killed by a gunshot wound in his Moscow apartment on Monday, Russia’s state-run Tass news agency reported. Police are looking into a theory that Avayev shot his wife and children, and then himself.
Although the names of the victims were not included in a public statement from the Russian government, Tass said an unnamed source later confirmed their identities.
Investigators said in their statement that they believe Avayev shot his wife and daughter, and then himself.
The second oligarch was found killed in Spain, some 2,000 miles away.
His name was Sergei Protosenya and he was found stabbed to death with his wife and daughter. Local media outlets claimed he had been found with a bloodied knife and axe by his side. Prior to his death, Protosenya had been the vice president and chief accountant of Novatek, a major gas company with close ties to Gazprombank.
White House Has ‘Almost Zero’ Ability to Track Weapons It Sends to Ukraine

A US official said the White House has “almost zero” ability to track the weapons it is sending to Ukraine. So far, President Joe Biden has approved over $3 billion in arms shipments to Kiev.
Speaking with CNN about the weapons, one source said, “we have fidelity for a short time, but when it enters the fog of war, we have almost zero. It drops into a big black hole, and you have almost no sense of it at all after a short period of time.”

An internal memo from the Ministry of Health has revealed there was no longer “any” health justification for MIQ way back in November 2021.
It means stranded Kiwis could have come home for Christmas instead of applying for a spot in state-run managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ).
Why has this only come out now? The short answer is the Ministry of Health didn’t want this advice out in public. They tried to keep it secret, refusing to release it until their hand was forced by the Ombudsman.

In a new ‘message’ aimed at the West, Russia on Wednesday test launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile, the Sarmat, according to Interfax citing the Russian defense ministry.
President Vladimir Putin said in a statement which accompanied the announcement that the new Sarmat missile will provide “food for thought for those who try to threaten Russia.” He congratulated the armed forces on the successful test launch. According to another translation, he said that the Sarmat will “make the madmen who attempt to threaten Russia think.”
