The issue brief — titled “The Economic Cost of Food Monopolies: The Grocery Cartels” — notes the grocery industry raked in record profits as the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically limited restaurant dining and compelled more people to prepare meals at home.
“Americans, however, faced rising food costs and widespread shortages of some staples,” the report states. “And while the cost of meat shot up, prices paid to farmers actually declined, spurring a federal investigation.

Maxwell’s defense attorney quizzed Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime former pilot Lawrence Paul Visoski Jr. about the politicians and celebrities he flew on the late pedophile’s private plane.
“Former President Bill Clinton flew on some of the flights?” lawyer Christian Everdell asked.
“Yes,” Visoski replied.
The aviator also testified under cross-examination that he remembered Prince Andrew riding on Epstein’s planes and said he shuttled Trump “more than once.”
Asked whether Trump flew on the jet with his family, Visoski testified, “I don’t remember that.”

Courts Block Two Biden Administration COVID Vaccine Mandates

The Biden administration was blocked on Tuesday from enforcing two mandates requiring millions of American workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19, a key part of its strategy for controlling the spread of the coronavirus.
U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty in Monroe, Louisiana, temporarily blocked the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) from enforcing its vaccine mandate for healthcare workers until the court can resolve legal challenges.
Doughty’s ruling applied nationwide, except in 10 states where the CMS was already prevented from enforcing the rule due to a prior order from a federal judge in St. Louis.

Greece Imposes $114 Monthly Fine on Unvaccinated People Over 60

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced mandatory Covid-19 vaccination for all Greeks above 60 years of age before a cabinet meeting in Athens on Tuesday, in an effort to tackle the new omicron variation threat ahead of the festive season.
Those who refuse to get vaccinated will have to pay a monthly fine of 100 euros ($114) for each month they don’t get jabbed, starting on Jan. 16, according to Mitsotakis. The penalty will be imposed by the tax authorities directly to those who haven’t been inoculated and the funds collected will be given to Greek hospitals fighting the pandemic.
“It is not a punishment,” Mitsotakis said. “I would say it is a health fee.”

In a potential breakthrough for regenerative medicine, scientists have created the first-ever living robots that can reproduce.
The millimetre-sized living machines, called Xenobots 3.0, are neither traditional robots nor a species of animal, but living, programmable organisms.
Made from frog cells, the computer-designed organisms, created by a US team, gather single cells inside a Pac-Man-shaped ‘mouth’ and release ‘babies’ that look and move like their parents.
Self-replicating living bio-robots could enable more direct, personalised drug treatment for traumatic injury, birth defects, cancer, ageing and more.

On its own, the Xenobot parent, made of some 3,000 cells, forms a sphere – but it can’t reproduce effectively over several generations.
‘These can make children but then the system normally dies out after that,’ said Sam Kriegman at Tuft’s. ‘It’s very hard, actually, to get the system to keep reproducing.’
So, the team used a computer – specifically an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm on the Deep Green supercomputer cluster at UVM.
The algorithm was able to test billions of body shapes in simulation – triangles, squares, pyramids, starfish – to find ones that replicate.
‘We asked the supercomputer at UVM to figure out how to adjust the shape of the initial parents, and the AI came up with some strange designs after months of chugging away, including one that resembled Pac-Man,’ said Kriegman.
‘It’s very non-intuitive. It looks very simple, but it’s not something a human engineer would come up with. Why one tiny mouth? Why not five? We sent the results to Doug and he built these Pac-Man-shaped parent Xenobots.
‘Then those parents built children, who built grandchildren, who built great-grandchildren, who built great-great-grandchildren.’
In other words, the Pac-Man design greatly extended the number of generations.
