Closing Web Browser Windows Doesn’t Close Connections

March 24th, 2021

Via: The Desolation of Blog:

Closing the private window closed the connections associated with the window, in every browser. Thus, it seems pretty clear that this behavior must be intentional. Searching on the web, I found a very suggestive document about the Chrome networking stack:

Socket reuse: persistent TCP connections are retained in the socket pool for some time after servicing the request to enable connection reuse, which avoids the extra DNS, TCP, and SSL (if required) setup overhead imposed on each new connection.

Los Angeles Unified School District and Microsoft Implement Daily Pass App for Students

March 23rd, 2021

As you watch this, you might be thinking, “This can’t be real.”

It’s definitely real.

Via: Reclaim the Net:

The Los Angeles Unified School District has partnered with tech giant Microsoft to introduce a COVID-19 “Daily Pass” app which requires students as young as 13 to complete daily in-app health checks in order to gain access to the school.

Students that pass the health checks will be given a scannable QR code “entrance ticket” which gives them access to the school for the day as long as they have a negative test result for COVID-19, show no symptoms, and have a temperature of under 100 degrees. Even after obtaining this entrance ticket and being granted access to the school, students will still be required to wear masks and social distance.

In addition to requiring students to complete daily health checks, the Daily Pass will also encourage students to schedule weekly COVID-19 tests, get a vaccine when it’s available, and store any external test results in the app.

Not only does the system force students in the Los Angeles Unified School District to use this COVID-19 Daily Pass system to gain access to schools but anonymous data from the app will also be used by several Los Angeles Unified research and health care collaborators (Anthem Blue Cross, Cedars Sinai, Healthnet, Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), The Johns Hopkins University) to “provide insights for strategies to create the safest possible school environment.”

COVID Nonsense: £5,000 Fines for Anyone Leaving the UK Without ‘Reasonable Excuse’

March 23rd, 2021

Via: Daily Mail:

Travellers face a £5,000 fine for going abroad on holiday when a ban on leaving the UK without ‘reasonable excuse’ comes into force on Monday.

The threat of fines has been extended until the end of June, making foreign summer holidays look increasingly unlikely as a third wave of coronavirus sweeps across Europe.

And France is likely to be added to a ‘red list’ of countries requiring hotel quarantine by the end of the week.

I don’t even know where to start.

Krispy Kreme is offering Americans a sweet incentive to get a COVID-19 vaccine by giving a free doughnut to anyone who shows proof of vaccination — and inoculated customers can keep going back every single day for the rest of the year.

The company announced Monday that anyone who shows a valid COVID-19 vaccination card will get a free Original Glazed doughnut at participating Krispy Kreme locations nationwide for the remainder of 2021.

Customers must bring in their own COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card to redeem the offer, and they can go back for one free doughnut every single day — no purchase required, the company says. Vaccine stickers do not qualify for the offer.

California Couple Paid Cash For Home, Covid-Squatter Refuses To Leave

California = Madness

Via: Fox:

When Tracie and Myles Albert purchased a beautiful four-bedroom house in Riverside, California they never realized that at the end of escrow the seller would suddenly refuse to give up the keys and leave.

Eviction Attorney Dennis Block says, “This year alone, we’ve handled at least 7 maybe 8 cases of this exact type of situation.”

He says people purchasing homes need to be extremely cautious, especially if they notice any red flags during the process. Block says what’s happening to the Alberts could happen to anyone.

“This person is not a tenant, it’s a previous owner who is enjoying the benefits of the money that was transferred to his account but of course doesn’t want to move out of the premises that he no longer owns,” Block stated.

The Never-Ending Battle Between Leviathan and Liberty

March 22nd, 2021

Via: Mises Institute:

History is a chronology of nations pillaged by reckless regimes.

American presidents take an oath of office solemnly swearing to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” But this has long been an empty ritual, akin to Roman emperors making public sacrifices to pagan gods they knew did not exist. Fealty to the Constitution has evaporated in part because philosophical trends have long favored absolute power.

Author Robert Anton Wilson observed, “Every national border in Europe marks the place where two gangs of bandits got too exhausted to kill each other any more and signed a treaty.” Similarly, the current extent of government power marks the boundary of political onslaughts into the private domain of liberty.

For many people, liberty is an abstraction until government agents ravage their lives. A lucid recognition of the coercive nature of Leviathan is vital for the defense of freedom.

Expecting liberty to permanently triumph would require rulers to miraculously become selfless if not self-sacrificing. But, as Hayek warned in his essay “Why the Worst Get on Top,” power is a magnet for the dregs of humanity. Faith in the state will continue reviving as long as some people feel entitled to domineer other people. Political action pays a higher premium on deceit than almost any other human activity and thus will remain perilous to everything decent.

UK Announces Vaccine ‘Certificates’, Says They Are Not Vaccine Passports

March 22nd, 2021

Via: Summit News:

The UK government Culture Secretary announced Thursday that “Covid-19 certification” is coming to enable people to attend sports events and go to theatre performances, but in the same breath denied that COVID passports are being introduced.

Appearing on Sky News, Oliver Dowden said that the government is trialling a system to ensure those who can prove they have taken a vaccine will be able to attend mass gatherings.

“We will be testing whether we can use Covid-19 certification to help facilitate the return of sports,” Dowden said, adding it will “help the return of the things that we love.”

50% of French and Swiss Care Workers and 70% of German Care Workers Will NOT Take COVID Vaccines

March 18th, 2021

Via: Reuters:

Around half of health workers in French care homes do not want to be vaccinated, according to the group of experts guiding the state’s vaccine rollout…

The issue is not unique to France.

In Germany, care home operator BeneVit Group surveyed staff in November and found only 30% wanted to get vaccinated.

Peter Burri, head of ProSenectute, Switzerland’s biggest advocacy group for seniors, said at most half of nursing staff in the medical sector were willing to get inoculated.
